The end of the road for cows

Brazil is now the world's largest exporter of corn, soybeans and beef...

Well it does vary, before the tariff war we held top honors in soybeans and corn. Odd fact most years India of all places, holds second place in beef exports....

We are by far the largest user (per capita) of beef and our beef industry is in a much better place when it comes to depending on exports- unlike the major grains.

Still one side effect of the tariff war is most producer countries have no (excuse the expression) beef with China and are now more than ever well placed to supply China if we continue to try and use agricultural goods as a bargaining chip.

Oh odd fact, Argentina does less than 10% of all soybean exports but is one of the largest exporter of processed products.... we are being beaten in our own game (capitalism) and are in most agricultural exports acting like a 3rd world country- exporting raw products to other nations to do the value added work...

Wadda country... :peace

They would serve "scrub beef" at cookouts, tasted good to me, but it looked like normal beef.

Veal is more than milk only fed, they are young calves pulled from dairy cows, kept in dim barns in small boxes to keep the muscling pink, weak so it's very tender. I don't care for the way real veal is made... :peace

Cattle contribute a lot to global warming. They constantly burp and fart methane and vast areas of forests have been chopped down to create pastures.

So I'm for synthetic meat. Long as it's cheaper and tastes good.

Well, they have discovered an enzyme in sea weed that can be added to the cows feed that allow them to digest their food better, and drastically reduce the amount of methane they produce.

Like you said veal is milk fed, to me the meat never developes the proper grain, so to speak.

I would think a younger calf would be tasty once it was eating solid food for awhile...

FFS why are you people talking about cows, then mentioning beef? City folk I presume. Cows Produce milk. Steers by large are the ones that we get the meat from.

I have butchered a whole lot of dairy cows, particularly after trump got in office and farmers were thinning their herds...

I'm not a vegetarian but I would like to see more mainstream plant based options.

Growing up and living near slaughterhouses my whole life, I don't share the same rosy picture of cows happily being in a pasture.

I grew up in Omaha. You can smell Omaha 75 miles away down wind. Those cows actually did used to graze in a pasture somewhere else before being trucked to the slaughterhouse pens. I see them all over Texas.

They'll take my cheeseburger when they pry it from my cold, death hands.

As a beef producer I assure you most of us who have manure on our boots from time to time use the term 'cow' as a generic reference. Well some older guys say 'beefs'. We get quite a lot of beef from Heifers- most that run through the auction ring get loaded up on semis for the feed lot just like the steers and bull calves. Older cows go and about the only real bet for not going to the feedlot is a 4 to 6 year old late term mamma cow.

Yes we use mamma cow for the ones that give birth.... :peace

Cow literally means mamma. Heifer literally means not mamma yet. Seems pretty ignorant to say "mamma cow".

Most people around cattle say just that; cattle. They do not say cows unless talking about cows (not steers, Bulls or heifers). ANd its by far not the end of the road for milk cows.

New data, is always welcome, I never saw a veal operation, or knew anyone who ran one.

I would think so also!

Don't I know it! I grew up within 10 blocks from the Omaha stockyards exchange building and still live in the area. It smells like home.

I'm thinking the ignorance is someone thinking they know all there is to know about terms cattlemen across the country use. I've bought quite a few mamma cows at auction and the auctioneer called them mamma cows. I have several neighbors who call their cows/cattle/beefs in with "hey momma cow, momma cow"

I've listened to old timers call cows beefs to differentiate them from dairy cattle. You don't know most cattlemen, but could know most who are around cows when they are wrapped in plastic.... :peace

Most vealers are dairymen who don't want have the pasturage to raise the calves they produce when they 'freshen' the milk cow. A few independents buy up the day old calves and have cage filled barns where the calves are kept a lot like factory chickens. I understand the economics of it, just don't ever want to treat animals that way... :peace

Thats crap, The same assholes using terms like "momma cows" or "cows beefs" are the same assholes that do not remove their hat under cover. Most likely their big experience amounts to a few head or that weekend at the dude ranch.

Plant based protein products such Impossible Burger and Beyond meat are just the tip of the iceberg. Manufactured proteins are going to very quickly replace livestock and there are a lot of benefits to the food chain, the environment and consumer health.

"Not interested" you say? Bad news: you might think you decide what you eat but you don't. That decision is made by marketers, food scientists and producers. Oh you can still have a steak from a real live cow in the future, just be ready to pay astronomical sums for the privilege.

Economic, social, environmental, geopolitical impact of the demise of the livestock industry.

As a vegetarian, I don't understand why anyone would bother with burgers that look like meat, there are plenty of decent burgers that don't look like meat and taste great.

Seems a bit weird to be telling people that they don't say the things they do say.

People say all kinds of stupid things, if you actually read what I said, I did not deny that anyone said anything.

Not sure I even care to get into a spat with you, just saying your words aren't part of the debate, aren't helpful, useful, and don't really seem to have much point at all. Over and out.

LMAO... I was a grunt, only the military remove hats when indoors (and only when not 'under arms')... under cover meant under a protective layer of cover in a firefight and you can bet the helmet doesn't come off then ....

You obviously haven't been around real cattlemen, the joke wives tell is- 'the only time my husband takes his hat off is in the shower and sometimes he forgets then!' The professionals I've heard say momma cows or just beefs make their living with cows, no dude ranch **** here.... :doh

Before the big drought we had a few years ago I ran just over 100 head- several bulls (Gelbvieh), a bunch of momma cows (auction ring commercial), some calves.

Now all told I have 48, I won't push my land that hard again. You sound like all hat and no cattle.... :peace

Gentlemen remove their hat when going inside a building. Disrespectful assholes leave their hat on when going inside. Its a very old tradition and the fact that you have no clue speaks volumes.

Cow: A cow is a female Bovine that has had at least one calf.
Heifer: A heifer is a female Bovine that has never had a calf. Once a heifer has a calf, she automatically becomes a cow.
Bull: A mature male Bovine that is used for breeding.
Steer: A steer is a male Bovine that has been neutered.

AT any rate I doubt that artificial beef will actually replace real beef anytime soon (except perhaps in NYC).

Nobody decides what I eat....I kill it or catch it myself!

For instance......I live on the Gulf Of Mexico and have all the fresh fish my family could eat......

Meat??? Well, its deer season here in Texas....already have two in the freezer!

P.S.....I've also have a nice garden and a few fruit trees.....

Ok people wanted to have beef but not contribute to global warming? well that train left everyone in the 1870's-1880's with the buffalo dying out. The buffalo or bison were delicious, eco friendly and could easily have been raised as food, and at their peak there were more buffalo in north america than there were people living in north america.

Whenever you think of a native american with a tear running down his face it was not really because a piece of trash was thrown down but rather how he can not enjoy delicious bison anymore.

Bison/buffalo produce vastly less greenhouse gasses to cows, were adept at foraging in north american plains and were very large animals, infact I want scientists to figure out a way to mass breed the original buffalo breed left in wyoming as most bison buffalo today farmed is a hybrid with a cow, either intentionally or accidentally through the decades.

When I was a little girl, we were on a road trip and drove by a pasture full of cows. I mentioned that my favorite animals were cows. My mom asked why. I replied, “It’s where cheeseburgers come from.”

I have not strayed from that logic.

Well put! :rock
