TMI: Nearly half of Americans don't change underwear daily, new survey says

Hmm... could this be a way of convincing (shaming?) folks to buy more pairs of that very expensive TJ underwear per order? If someone buys any less than 7 pairs (per order) then perhaps the TJ company would assume that they do not change them often enough.

BTW, this also a clever way to get free advertising for that TJ brand by presenting their "informal poll" to the news media.

I recently saw a news story about folks discovering "ghost" images with their baby monitor camera systems. The "expert" guest (from a manufacturer of baby monitors) suggested adding (buying) a second camera to see if the "ghost" image showed up on both cameras.

1. There are some "experts" who say that bathing daily is NOT necessary or even advisable, depending on the individual.

a. It depends on one's age, occupation, etc.

2. Of course, when one DOES bathe, then it IS a good idea to change underwear.

3. I do not know if it is true, but I have read that many men in some European nations change their underwear once a week.


4. Some people do not change their underwear every day because they do not feel that their underwear is soiled. They are people, for example, who wash certain areas with water after every No. 2. (Is this the idea of the bidet?)

Instead of throwing out worn out undies, I collect them. When I go out on disaster relief, hiking etc, I take the bunch with me and throw them out after wearing them for a day. Works really well.

If the survey is correct, then there are a number of folks among us that do not bathe regularly. Can't imagine someone taking a shower and putting back on the same dirty underwear but then again I can't imagine people wearing the same underwear for days.

But just 100 years ago, a good part of this country still did not have running water in their homes. Major cities where the wealthy could afford it but many especially outside the city limits did not have indoor plumbing. They had outhouses and wells. If all you had to wipe with a Sears and Roebuck catalog I have no doubt many had skid marks in their drawers.

They often would have a pump to the house to access water from the well in the kitchen. I am sure you have seen wash stands in antique shops that were common at that time where a pitcher and basin would sit on them. They would go to the kitchen and fill the pitcher then fill the basin to wash up usually before bedtime. An entire bath was done often in a galvanized steel tub where family members got honest to goodness scrubbing, hair washing usually the day before attending worship services.

I have no doubt they wore their underwear more than one day in those days. Without indoor plumbing and electricity doing laundry was quite a chore.

When I was a kid in the 1960's our roadside rest stops were outhouses in Ohio. I remember as a kid gagging having to go in a place like that with the flies and smell.

I also remember as a kid that women would have their hair done once a week. Some old gals still do to this day. Today I could not imagine not washing my hair for a week.

In this day in age people wearing their underwear for days by choice is rather disturbing.

The Amish come to mind. Driving through Amish country on a Tuesday, count the # of undies hanging on the line. Oh, and the hair thing, yup, still lots of what I call Qtips out there who have their curls rolled by a pro once a week.
