From the NY Daily News:

Out of 1,000 people responding to an informal poll conducted by the underwear maker, 45% admitted they had worn the same pair of undies for two or more days, with 13% saying they had worn the same pair for a week or more, Tommy John said.

...In a finding that did not surprise the company, Tommy John said men were 2.5 times as likely as women to wear unwashed undies for a week or more. That’s 20% of men versus 8% of women. TMI: Nearly half of Americans don’t change underwear daily, new survey says - New York Daily News

A WEEK or more! Who knew there were so many dirty birdies out there?!

I bet most of them are football players.

Re: TMI: Nearly half of Americans don’t change underwear daily, new survey says

Would that be a brief poll?

I blame feminism. Thankfully, I can just bellow: Woman, why is my underwear drawer almost empty? Voila, clean underwear the next day.

i change underwear daily even when camping unless there's no way around it. the exception is if i'm really sick and am sleeping for days.

If I have a day off, a day and a half, two days max maybe on that if I’m really not doing anything.

But a week... That’s... That’s extreme.

Or so she’d have you believe it’s clean.

Why oh why, I can wear pants for a few days straight if needed, or the same shirt a few days if needed, but I will not wear the same underwear or socks more than a day, jungle rot is a real thing.

And the smell how can someone ignore the smell!

I demand the government do something....

Perhaps confiscate underwear from the richest 1% and redistribute to those who need them...

Or so she’d have you believe it’s clean.

Just a theoretical and hypothetical question, kind of like if a tree falls in the forest does it make sound... Can underwear ever really be clean if it’s worn by a putrid asshole.

Something to ponder.

If the survey is correct, then there are a number of folks among us that do not bathe regularly. Can't imagine someone taking a shower and putting back on the same dirty underwear but then again I can't imagine people wearing the same underwear for days.

Nor I. Why, it's enough to make a lady nearly swoon. And I hadn't even considered the notion of showering and then putting dirty drawers back on.

BTW, in the linked article there is discussion of how laundering doesn't remove all the E coli from underwear, so you dirty birds think about that!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hypothetical question that’s as purely hypothetical as this one.

If I have to wear high dollar Tommy John underwear, I going 3-5 days. With Hanes and Fruit I'm going daily.

Biased. Tommy John.

One out of 5 people wear their underwear for a week or more? That is quite medieval. I'm wondering how this poll was conducted. These people have internet service but no laundry facilities?
Yuk.

I would think after a week the briefs in question would either stand up on their own, or be quite broken in. Any voice of experience on that?

By today's standards not cleaning your body daily or changing your underwear screams uncleanliness. But just 100 years ago, a good part of this country still did not have running water in their homes. Major cities where the wealthy could afford it but many especially outside the city limits did not have indoor plumbing. They had outhouses and wells. If all you had to wipe with a Sears and Roebuck catalog I have no doubt many had skid marks in their drawers.

They often would have a pump to the house to access water from the well in the kitchen. I am sure you have seen wash stands in antique shops that were common at that time where a pitcher and basin would sit on them. They would go to the kitchen and fill the pitcher then fill the basin to wash up usually before bedtime. An entire bath was done often in a galvanized steel tub where family members got honest to goodness scrubbing, hair washing usually the day before attending worship services.

I have no doubt they wore their underwear more than one day in those days. Without indoor plumbing and electricity doing laundry was quite a chore.

When I was a kid in the 1960's our roadside rest stops were outhouses in Ohio. I remember as a kid gagging having to go in a place like that with the flies and smell.

I also remember as a kid that women would have their hair done once a week. Some old gals still do to this day. Today I could not imagine not washing my hair for a week.

In this day in age people wearing their underwear for days by choice is rather disturbing.

That's it--by choice.

If there is no choice, that's how it is, and back in the day, most people had one outfit that they wore for months with maybe a different shirt/pair of pants or dress for Sundays and special occasions. At least one study in the last couple of years has suggested that rat fleas may have borne too much of the blame for the spread of bubonic plague and that fleas on humans (in their bedding and clothing) may have been a larger contributor.

Our modern sensibilities about hygiene are so different from our forebears. Thomas Jefferson was considered quite eccentric for having a bathtub in the White House because bathing frequently was considered risky. And, as you've said, keeping clean wasn't easy without running water and sewage systems. I wonder how long one of us would last if exposed to the what the ordinary Londoner lived with at the time the "Black Plague" was spreading.

But to choose not to change your underwear now? Eeeeew.
