Obsolete Man Skills You Should Ditch - AskMen

The skills men aspire to are the Man Skills, an ability to solve real-world problems, often involving physical strength or technical know-how, rather than creativity or emotional intelligence. Unfortunately, however, as the technology in our lives shifts from analog to digital and from a luxury to a necessity, a lot of the traditional Man Skills are lessening in importance.

What that means is guys still care about being good at things that have no (or little) practical usage today, while ignoring the growing importance of developing experience and comfort with new types of skill sets.

I'm just going to give the Cliff's Notes version before discussion -

1. Hunting - Instead, Learn How to Cook for Yourself
2. Fighting - Instead, Learn How to Mediate
3. Repairing Your Car - Instead, Learn How to Code
4. Fixing Things at Home - Instead, Learn How to Decorate
5. Being a Leader - Instead, Learn How to Collaborate
6. Being a Disciplinarian - Instead, Learn How to Communicate With Your Children
7. Holding Your Emotions In - Instead, Learn How to Talk About Your Feelings

OK. I'm not going to bash this stuff....well, not entirely. I mean, cooking and communicating with your kids and stuff is good.

However....

It isn't "instead of" good. How about a little of both? How about hunting AND knowing how to cook what you harvest (and how to use pelts, and bones and sinew, etc.). How about developing a real appreciation for the stuff that's in the cooler at the grocery store? How about knowing at least SOMETHING about how to survive if there isn't a grocery store!

Mediation is great right up until the point you get socked in the face. At that point it's a good idea to know how to fight.

Being a man does not require you wearing your balls outside your pants but it damned sure doesn't require cutting them off either!

I read the title as being about Obsolete Math Skills ... and enthusiastically clicked.

Now I don't know what to do. :)

The two bolded simply make no sense.

Doing long division using Roman numerals: now THAT’s a skill only a real man can do!

1. Hunting - Instead, Learn How to Cook for Yourself (why can't one do both?)
2. Fighting - Instead, Learn How to Mediate (why can't one do both?)

6. Being a Disciplinarian - Instead, Learn How to Communicate With Your Children (one often MUST do both)
7. Holding Your Emotions In - Instead, Learn How to Talk About Your Feelings
---Okay thanks, I already learned how to do that a long time ago.

Actually, I dont even consider home and car repair a "man skill"....it should be a basic skill; when my daughter got her first vehicle, I taught her the basics of maintenance and repair....waiting on a man to fix her vehicle it patently ridiculous.

Well, with a wife who was a Navy diesel mechanic, you can bet our daughter knows the basics.

I added my daughter to our AAA subscription. ;)

1. Hunting - Not seeing how that even makes sense anymore.
2. Fighting - Definitely not wise in this day and age
3. Repairing Your Car - Most cars don't even require a tune up anymore
4. Fixing Things at Home - I still do this
5. Being a Leader - Gotta get "buy-in" but leading by example never dies.
6. Being a Disciplinarian - Grandparenting is the opposite.
7. Holding Your Emotions In - Sure way to a heart attack; vent early and often.

Same here.....and assembled her a basic set of road emergency tools and first aid kit; each of our vehicles has them.

Same here. All vehicles have emergency tools, first aid, emergency snacks, a small inverter (or in the case of wifey's van, a HUGE one) and a dashcam.
All four also have at least one FRS two way radio.

There is no such thing as the generic stereotypical man or woman. There are women that the OPer is correct about - and women the OPer is exactly incorrect about. The same for the general opinion of other people. Some agree with you. Some do not.

Summary: Seek out your own kind. Forget about those who are not.

Now THAT is something I have been considering adding.....dash cams.

How do you like them? Worth the investment?

I'm sorry, what are you going to hunt in Tucson, AZ if the food supply for all of society collapses? You either go all in with the doomsday prep, or accept the distribution of labor and services in a modern society. Hunting is a welcome hobby if done ethically and legally, but I would hardly say it is a necessary skill for a man to have in the 21st Century.

Absolutely and don't skimp on the quality because you're going to want one that can read a license plate.
Dual camera system with a rear camera is also a good extra feature, in case you're rear ended or run off the road, etc.

Have you ever been to Tucson? There's all kinds of game around here. We've got small game such as rabbits out the wazoo. Javelina are abundant and totally edible. We've got plenty of deer. Bighorn sheep were recently re-introduced and their population has stabilized. We've got black bear and mountain lion. If you head north a little bit there are abundant elk. There's fishing and fowl all over the place. The quail hunting is amazing.

If you can't tie a bowline, a sheetbend and a clove hitch with a half-hitch you need to brush up on 'man skills'.

I'm sure that would sustain the population, let alone all the thousands who would have the means to hunt this game. I think it's a silly argument for hunting.

Didnt read the link but the bold it red is what I was thinking....i could do all that stuff but fix a car and code.... now i can do a little of BOTH but i would never say those are skills i have.

This area has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. Hunting sustained those populations.

Sure, of the half million or so living here the vast majority would die of starvation if Starbucks moved out of town but that's also why "man skills" are important.

The population of fauna has greatly reduced over the duration of our stay here. You are off in the clouds on this one. Enjoy your hunting though, a completely unnecessary skill.
