There are SO many but Mark Knopfler and Gary Hoey are two of my favorites. Who do you think is THE best?? Rock and roll. (Believe it or not, Prince was amazing.)

Eric Clapton. Nobody has a body of work that even comes close. E.C. is the ' Forever Man.' ...Hendrix also set the world on fire.

That is a tough one, so many good guitarists to pick from and when considering genre and time period it gets even more complicated.

In no particular order... Eddie Van Halen, Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana, Prince, John Lee Hooker, Joe Satriani, the list goes on.

Listening to how these guys played, with those bands, and to those audiences they are amazing.

At the risk of doing a disservice to those on these lists, I tend to think the best was Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton.

I think I would agree with those who answered 'Clapton.' Nobody can make their guitar actually sing but he somehow does.

Nobody mentioned David Gilmour?? Saw PF during their Division Bell tour at the Oakland Colosseum in the 80. Best time ever.

I've had a few favorites over the years, though I don't go back as far as some here. My first favorite was George Lynch from Dokken, then Steve Vai, then I had a lull where I didn't really have a favorite. But as far as modern guitarists today, I'm digging this dude:

Never really been a "best" man for anything, because that is so subjective.

Prince was great! Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton were also awesome.

I'll second Knopfler. Saw them on their first American tour.

Mike Dawes is brilliant.

We caught them the same tour. Led of with “Down to the Waterline.” The intro was extended, the house lights were way downand you could feel the anticipation building. George Washington University, DC.

The "best" is fairly subjective but many have shown incredible talent. Danny Gatton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Gilmour, BB King, Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani and Jimmy Thackery should make any such list.

Thanks for the links. I love watching videos. The Band made a great one where Clapton's guitar strap broke and Robbie Robertson took over for him without missing a beat -- like a boss. So polished. SO GOOD! Here's a favorite (sorry about the ad):

Here's another of Knopfler's good ones: Cleaning My Gun

Absolutely one of the greats.

Here is some Jimmy Thackery - earlier with The Nighthawks and later with The Drivers

Yes Prince was way under rated as a guitarist because he had so many other talents as well.

I was just saying to my daughter last night that I really regret never seeing Prince live. I lived in Minnesota in the eighties and he played first Ave all the time so there never seemed to be any urgency.

Then I lived in Wisconsin just a couple hours away and just never bothered to go.

As for the best, Les Paul was asked that on the tonight show one time, he never even hesitated and immediately said Eddy Van Halen was the best he had ever seen.

I can agree, however there are so many different styles that it is very difficult to claim one is better than another, a few of the top of my head that own their own style...

Jimmy Paige

Steve Ray Vaughn

Eric Clapton

Jerry Garcia

Jimmy Hendrix

Randy roads

To Name a few in no particular order...

Edit I left out Roy Buchanan...

Gillmore wrote some very good kicks but he plays them the same every time, he has no improve skills. Anyone can learn Gillmore...

Frank, and his son Dweezil.

Since everyone loves Clapton, here's Further up the Road played with The Band. At 1:03 Clapton's strap breaks. Without missing a beat Robertson steps in for him, then backs away again when Clapton gets his strap back on. These two are polished pros and its just a pleasure to watch. Love it!

I reckon you're right. But boy the sounds he made come out of that guitar were unique to say the least. Great stuff!

I loved that second video. I love that sound. I hear a little Carlos Santana in there (saw them with the Dead in Monterey in the 80s).

We saw Dweezil's last tour, it started here in AZ, he has an amazing band. Got to meet him afterwards, he is a pretty cool guy, very down to earth.

Inca Roads was a Frank Zappa song, it is amazing.

The best I have seen live included

Jimmy Page
Adrian Belew
Martin Barre
Johnny Ramone (yeah, Johnny Ramone)
Jerry Garcia

I think once you get to a certain level, it comes down to taste.

Others include
Clapton
Winwood
Duane Allman, Derek Trucks and Dickie Betts
Richard Thompson
Ike Turner
Jorma Kaukonen
Stephen Stills
Jimi Hendrix
Leslie West
Aaron and Bryce Dessner
etc etc

My favorites include Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Richard Thompson, Gary Moore, David Gilmour, Steve Howe, Jeff Beck.

The problem with this question is that it's usually answered in terms of people's favorites.

What kind of guitarist?
What criteria?
