So cola nut flavors taste soapy, much like cilantro does to some people?

Yup. I don't tolerate cilantro much. Cola nuts are used in some Caribbean dishes, they can be bought in Caribbean food stores. Chewing on one makes me think of all those threats from mom about washing out my mouth with soap. That soapy flavor disappears when nutmeg is also used. Cola nuts in Caribbean cooking are often combined with nutmeg, cinnamon and hot peppers for stews and sauces served over broiled whole fish or fish steaks from large fish, like marlin or bluefish. Often those sauces are infused with orange zest and mango juice. They are also a mainstay for some regional Brazilian dishes, especially Brazilian Manuto, also with copious amounts of nutmeg.

When nutmeg was first introduced to Europe from India, its popularity was based on its hallucinatory qualities. When large amounts were consumed it created the sensation of floating. For some that was considered an aphrodisiacal sensation. Some overdosed and died. Floating to Heaven. :)

If these are the only two options, I choose coke. If it includes sub-brands, I go with Pepsi, but only because ... Mt. Dew.

I can drink most sodas in small amounts, but I understand what you mean about them just tasting wrong when you are used to your brand. Ever quit soda for a few weeks? It makes them all taste disgusting when you first try them again. It's really odd.

Mt Dew was a drink I loved as a kid and in college. For some reason it makes me sick now.

Coca Cola Classic, is there any other kind of soda worth drinking. I think not. The best I think is from of all places the Freestyle machines, The McDonalds fountain, a clean well kept and properly setup fountain using the BIB system, glass bottled Mexican Coke, then cans, then plastic bottles. I made that list in order of preference. Fresher is better, with either the fountain syrups or the bottled or canned. I cant drink diet sodas of any kind because the artificial sweeteners are affected by the carbonic acid in carbonated water, which I can taste to a very minute level. I can drink a coke diluted with one 1/3 coke zero but it HAS to be made with fresh syrup.

I did find a good alternative to Coca Cola that was very similar but had a spicy kick to it called Spicy Kola Nut by Torino but they don't make it anymore that I am aware of.

Sometimes when I want a good spicy kick to the Coca Cola I will use a real cinnamon stick the good stuff with pinch of ground mixed in.

Ahh. A soda connoisseur!

My condolences. ;)

Mine, too.

With Jack Daniels in it I can't tell if its Coke or Pepsi

With Coke or Pepsi in it you can't tell if it's Jack Daniels either.
Anyone who'd put pop in whisky would put ketchup on eggs.

i also like cherry diet rite. it's a bit difficult to find, because i'm the only person who likes cherry diet rite, and they're having trouble figuring out where i'll be.

I'm so very sorry for your loss! It still make me happy, but aint so good for my tummy.

Coke or Pepsi? This has been asked since the beginning of, well, soda. I am a Coke girl. Well, Diet Coke. My husband is a Diet Pepsi guy (probably only because I am a Diet Coke girl, because he has always been Coke over Pepsi).

So I am currently out of Diet Coke in the fridge, and he has Diet Pepsi in there (BECAUSE HE NEVER DRINKS IT BECAUSE HE PREFERS COKE - I SWEAR THIS IS A POWER THING WITH HIM). So I begrudgingly took one of his nasty Diet Pepsis, and it tastes like cleaning products. There is a slight taste of soap in there somewhere.

Sorry, rant off.

And no need for anti-soda Nazis to come in and tell me that soda will kill me, because I do not care. I have very few vices - this is one that I will have until the day I die (even if I die from soda intake).

I really drink little to no pop now-a-days but i can still answer

Diet pop as always tasted like completely bitter soap scum bath water to me LOL . . and ive tried it many times over the years hoping i could "acquire" a taste foe it so in the few times i do have a pop i could drink a diet one . . . . nope . .never works . . i have even forced some diet mt dews down over the years in desperation to hope my brain for trick my taste buds . . .always a complete fail . . .

now on to your question . .

if we are talking two liters, cans or 20oz bottles i take pepsi over coke every day of the week and twice on sunday.
If we are talking fountain drinks i do like fountain coke . . the syrup/sugar content seems much higher and i like it best

if its free reign and im sticking to normal sodas ill take mt dew first over all

I cut back on sodas so now I rarely have one but when I do my favorite is Vanilla Coke.
It's the best!

I drink 2 cans of diet caffeine free coke per day. Down significantly from a decade ago when I drank 2 liters of the stuff, per day.

When I grew up Pepsi was almost unheard of. Coke was number one, RC cola or Royal Crown occupied the number two spot. I'm still a fan of RC. Give me an RC and an moonpie and I'm in heaven.

Man, I miss RC. We used to get these huge glass bottles of RC in an 8 pack. So cold, ice was floating in it. I miss those days. :)

You can still get moon pies, but RCs are hard to find.

Anybody tried this yet? I picked up a bottle while I was in Alabama a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty wretched. I drank a couple of drinks and tossed the bottle.

Anyone remember the “distance game?” The old glass, eight oz. bottles were embossed with the town of origin. Whenever a few folks got together for a break with Coke, the winner was the one who had the bottle from the longest distance from where the folks were. This was still happening in the early 1980s. The bottles changed in the 1960s.

that's a bummer. i had to give up caffeine for the most part in 2010. these days, i can finally tolerate the occasional real diet coke / coffee, but i do miss diet Mountain Dew.

I'm down with Frito Lay. Love me some Scoops with guac.

But keep that nasty Pepsi.

Didn't say I eat the stuff. Just want others to so my investment to rise!

Krogers carries RC down here. I get the double decker moonpies at Sams. I remember the big 16 oz bottles of RC.

I rarely drink any kind of fizzy pop, but could always tell Coke from Pepsi. Trouble was they wanted to give a bottle of it as a prize!

I'm addicted to Coke and it has definitely brought me some dental work.

Trying to cut back (as I literally sip a Coke writing this), as I'm just now getting a mouth with zero cavities, and I'll soon be getting braces.

Seltzer guy here...gave up the soda.
Funny story, my paternal grandfather only drank seltzer because he "refused to drink water that came from a pipe out of the ground". Back in Frankfurt they had their own natural spring, so he drank the spring water, but once he emigrated to America it was seltzer only. He didn't trust the municipal water.
They had the old fashioned glass seltzer bottles.

I guess a Sodastream or similar unit is reminiscent of the old seltzer bottles.
Doesn't anyone here use either of these units?
