So....I acquired a cat today; Some of you may know I work in Afghanistan, and we have occasional strays around our compounds.

Today I was returning back to my compound and I saw a dog with a cat in its mouth shaking it and chewing on it....I stopped the dog and retrieved the cat, and, surprisingly, it didnt try to flee, and instead tried to climb inside my jacket.

I will be turning the cat over to the vet in the morning for treatment and vaccination; the injuries are survivable, and normally I would see it treated and released, but this cat is highly socialized, and has no fear of Me, and allowed me to handle and clean its wounds.

As I already have a few cats, I am unable to keep it in my home, but I will be returning to the States with it.

If anyone is seriously interested, please PM me; I will be handling the cost of bringing the cat back to the States.

Is this like a Savannah cat? In many areas it is illegal to own one in the United States.

No...local domestic shorthair silver and black tabby.

A moggie.

I hope to have pics at a later date.

That's great you were able to rescue it. I have a Siberian Persian cat (almost 18 years old now) that I took back with me from when I was stationed in Korea. Wish I could take the one you have in, but don't have any room right now as we also have two other cats now as well as two dogs. We used to have three dogs, but the other passed away about 2 years ago.

I have a grand total of eight; one of which is a Siberian.....Got him when I was stationed in Hawaii, and he moved with Me until I retired, excellent cat for bonding with the family.

I hope to find someone willing to adopt this cat that lives close by....I really dont want to road trip across the US if I can avoid it. I can fly him back to the states, get the vaccinations taken care, and see to his medical care, but when I next come home on leave, I want to be able to deliver him to a forever home.

Cat went to the vet today; He ( it is a he ) will be held for a few weeks to heal, undergo antibiotic therapy, get his wounds stitched, get vaccinated and fixed.

He has the temporary moniker of "Winston", and appears to be about 2 years old according to the vet.

Depends. Does it speak Farsi or Pashtu? :lamo

Winston?! What is he a British Lord or something? Get him an Afghan name!

The shelter was founded by a British Soldier about 10 years ago, and some of the volunteers are British.

The "Nowzad" shelter ( you can google it) provides medical care for animals, as well as temporary boarding for animals that soldiers in country have decided to adopt, and will assist in getting the animal to the airport with vaccination documents and pet carriers to allow the animals to travel to thier new homes.

Thank you. :)

If you know of anyone looking for an Imported, autonomous, bed warming, rodent seeking, vermin suppression system...let me know.

This is a very kind thing for you to do. Winston is very lucky to have crossed your path. I wish you both the best in getting his health back and finding him a forever home.

I would indeed. We already have three cats, and are attaining the age where we must consider what will happen to them upon our demise. I deeply hope that Winston will find a "forever home" close to where you live, with a family that will love and care for him as we would have, when we were physically able to do so. Again, bless your heart for what you have done for a desperate, frightened, innocent animal.

Ladies and Gents, allow me to introduce Winston....

Winston is 2 years old ( abouts), vaccinated, fixed, and healing well from his injuries; he enjoys long slovenly naps, drooling on laps, and eating everything....his hobbies include long slovenly naps, drooling on laps, and eating everything.

His interests include long slovenly naps, drooling on laps, and eating everything.

Interested potential adopting families should know he speaks fluent purr ( with a Tajik accent), meow, trill and some conversational chirping.

He is highly social, friendly, and does enjoy being held and sitting on people.

Why don't you just keep it yourself? It seems like this cat like you and there's nothing wrong if you take good care of it.

Just Champaign lying on the couch full of her white fur.

I have eight cats at home; it would not be fair to them, or Winston.....while the house is spacious enough with a large "catio" outside, I have to keep in mind that the eight I have now have been mostly raised together since they were kittens.

Winston would require a home by himself or with far fewer cats; as social as he is, it would still be a bit much for him, and to be honest, too much for my other cats....ideally, I would like half the number of cats that my family currently has, but my wife is unwilling to part with them due to thier advanced ages....senior cats do not get adopted as easily as younger cats.

If it's an Afghan cat, how do we know it doesn't have Taliban sympathies? One day you could be cleaning up its toys, only to find out the hard way that it had covertly filled its catnip ball with explosives, turning it into a makeshift IED! Next thing you know, you're missing your big toe...... Is it worth the risk??

I have a soft spot for cats. :)

And they clearly have a soft spot for you.
We have two of the critters, one is my daughter's calico and the black/white tuxedo is "daddy's little girl".
I'd love to take Winston but ain't no way our two would accept a newbie, we already tried.

Well....he is currently undergoing an extensive Americanization and deradicalization program....Listening to Lee Greenwood, watching "Red Dawn" ( original, not the remake) and "Team America", eating McDonalds cheeseburgers that are airlifted daily, being taught the fundamentals of Nintendo, Facebook, and being able to identify 8 out of 10 American beers correctly.

It is our hope to be able to channel his bomb making tendencies against mice and rats.....though, to be perfectly honest, cats make great suicide bombers....they can do it 9 times.

I hope that you will be able to find him a new home then.

Keep us posted on Winston hope you find a good home for him.
