Apparently it is problematic

Its insistence on this brand of heroism is further problematic when you consider the fact that all of Venom’s villains are people of colour and all its heroes are white.

"Pandering to whiteness"

Venom’s pandering to whiteness, particularly to those who are both white and poor and maybe even feeling forgotten or victimized in some way by the state of society in 2018, is obvious in its machinations. Indeed, that’s what will most likely draw swaths of people to see the film and enjoy it in the way it was intended. (Hey, it worked for Trump.)

Just like Trump did, apparently

In all seriousness though, it is bad when all the bad guys are minorities and all the good guys are "oppressed" white people.

I haven't seen the movie, but:

According to Rotten Tomatoes, only 31% of critics liked the movie, however, 89% of audience goers liked the movie.

Maybe the critics are... too, critical?

Two thoughts:

1) It's just a fantasy movie about a world and reality that doesn't exist, not a docudrama about US society, and;
2) Lighten up and enjoy entertainment for what it is - entertainment.

I like movies that are entertaining. Some of them have had overtly left wing plot lines, but they were entertaining for me and I'm intelligent enough to understand that they are NOT real life.

That happens a lot now but it tends to be because the movies are not politically correct.....this one from what I read gets slammed because the story is a depressing mess, which is a common problem with modern Hollywood Crappola.

BTW Movies are not just fluff entertainment, they are some of our most important cultural and societal messaging, they are very important, which is why the left puts so much energy into making sure that they conform to their dogma.

Um....Venom is white, and he is the primary villain?

I watched it last night with my kids. They liked it but it was easily my least favorite comic book movie in a long time.

I’m not sure I get the criticism, though. Venom is not a “good guy” by any stretch of the imagination. And the host he took over, the white protagonist, was a piece of crap who betrayed his girl friend for a story. I think this movie is a poor example of this particular criticism.

There's no rule that Venom has to be white, except that comics already written have that character as white.

Hell, it's a symbiote, it could attach to anyone.

I didn't like it much. Tom Hardy's lead character was a goofy ass douche I couldn't empathize with at all, the rest of the characters were mostly uninteresting... it was almost a farce of an action movie.

The villain seemed like a stand-in for Elon Musk almost, and the message if any was "corporations bad, science bad, space bad".

Tiresome really.

And don't forget what the bad guy...Venom's "team leader"...did to various people. The white astronaught, the white EMT, the brown skinned lady, the white girl child. And don't forget what Venom did to that little dog.

Though I've got to say the ex-girlfriend was really hot when Venom took her over.

The trailers for the Venom movie are confusing. Normally the super hero genre movies are NOT titled exclusively with the name of a super villain, and normally the super heroes are focused on in the trailer. But here there seems to be absolutely NO mention of ANY superheroes! So what is it supposed to be about, a single super villain who just goes around eating peoples' heads off for 96 minutes or whatever?? Does he exist in a universe where no super heroes exist? What exactly is the plot here? Lol

What you are looking for will happen in Spiderman 2, Graduation.

Yeah, I thought the Life Foundation nonsense was pretty stupid. Only thing I liked was Venom and Eddie Brock's relationship. Maybe I'd have cared about his relationship w/ Michelle Williams' character more, if their chemistry wasn't as dull as a rock.

Casual audiences tend to look at movies way less critically. That's why audience scores for Suicide Squad are higher than the critic rating, but the movie itself is garbage. Venom is not that great of a movie, though. It's average at best.

It goes to show that Sony just doesn't know how to make good movies. I say they need to give over whatever remaining Marvel characters they have over to Marvel Studios. Its in much better hands w/ them.

I appreciate the insight on the movie. I’ll wait until it’s online for free to see it.

Haven't watched it yet. Will watch it this weekend. Heard that it is a good movie.

I liked it. This is definitely a much better Venom than any of the other on-screen portrayals. Never got boring, has some funny moments, overall would probably be 7/10 or 8/10.

My husband and youngest daughter love Marvel movies, so I was hoping that they would go see Venom while I went to see The Hate U Give. They didn't seem to interested in seeing it.

Guess they read the reviews, too.
