Should schools have dress codes?

You champion bullying and a social caste system.

Way to go.

Many grins! Yeah, about as much as I embrace strict communism or fascism.

Florida has 67 counties. In my county of residence and all of the adjacent counties, pretty much any parent regardless of socio-economic status, can enroll their child/children in a Charter School. Almost all the Charter Schools require a uniform.

As a (very) senior citizen, I feel more comfortable seeing people of all ages dress "appropriately."

I have just seen a TV report that posters on social media are forcing many schools to "change" (abolish?) their dress codes.

In this case, an elementary school male was turned away from the first day of school because he was wearing dreadlocks. I believe the school is a private one. His father took a video of the incident and called the school's action an example of "bias."

I also read today that one school is in deep trouble because female students were advised to "dress like a lady." Those four words created much outrage and were immediately deleted. The administrator humbly apologized.

A private school can do what it wants with regard to a dress code. A public school however, can only insist on a "decency" standard which varies from community to community.

I remember in middle school, a girl came to class in a very short tight skirt and no underwear. She was sent home.

I can say with absolute certainty that she was a distraction. :)

Good for them. It's the ones who don't want to comply that are the problem.

Your express a willingness to fight against Freedom of Expression while I rigorously fight for it. I respect your right to make decisions for your children. I refuse to turn over my right to make decisions for my children to the government or you. Capace?

If that's how you feel, why not just advocate that the children be allowed to go to school naked? Or how about the teachers be naked?

How would you feel about a class of kindergartners being taught by an overweight male teacher with nothing at all to cover him?

How far are you willing to go to fight for your Freedom of Expression? Is it okay if the teacher takes a dump on his desk in front of the kids? I mean, if he's just expressing himself and all?

Your ignorance and narcissism on this topic makes me laugh.

Likewise, your incredible and utter ridiculousness reflect an uncompromising intransigence. While I do not know enough about you to say with certainty, I would guess you have spent a lot of time on a midwest farm... thus feel an intrinsic right to Rule Supreme on all living things within your control.

I have already raised children to adulthood and feel pretty good about them... one a 25 year old millionaire and the other, age 28, quite successful by conventional measures.

Why did you avoid my questions? Are you frightened to answer them because they will shoot your argument right out of the water? I have spent a lot of time on a Midwestern farm -- it's where I live. I'm not a farmer, but I have someone farming the land for me. I've also spent a lot of time traveling both in and outside the US, and I can tell you that the narcissism you exhibit isn't welcome in very many arenas. Certainly not in crowds that value raising children to be able to function in the real world.

ROFL -- it never fails. When someone is backed in a corner -- they pull out fantastical scenarios.

Sure, dude. I mean -- really.

If your argument isn't sufficient to make your case, it's a good sign that your case is weak.

What better proof in an argument than ones own life experience? I fathered four daughters ... two now adults and the younger two still minors. I chose not to waste my time answering your utterly ridiculous questions.

When I opted my 2nd grade daughter out of a mandatory school uniform policy, I met some resistance. You remind me of some of the more knuckle-headed ones. Ultimately, the School Board attorney advised the School Board I would win in a lawsuit. I signed an opt-out form and I joined my daughter's School Advisory Council.

Your views on mandatory uniform policies align with anti-freedom and totalitarian government views.

In this forum, some choose to contribute financially. Some don't. Which category do you belong to? Why?

Teaching a second-grader that she doesn't have to respect the rules? That not cool.

You still refuse to answer and give me your opinion about the students, and/or teachers going to school buck naked?

Why is that?

What do you mean? Are you asking if I donate to the forum? If so, No, I have not, but I might someday. Is that your attempt at further deflection? Because it's not very good. And, it's not even remotely related to the discussion.

Now, why don't you belly up to the bar and answer my question about whether it's anti-freedom and totalitarian to refuse to allow teachers and students to be naked in class?

Come on -- be a sport. Quit hiding.

You display your intransigence with Confederate reverence!

My child's School Advisory Council attempted to implement a policy without thorough vetting. Courts had already ruled on countless similar cases. I know with certainty that neither the Conservative-leaning School Board nor the School Advisory Council would have acquiesced if left to decide without judicial influence. My daughter, then and now, understood and respected authority. She actively participated in organized youth league sports all through her formative years.

I already explained to you that I chose not to answer your utterly ridiculous questions.

Choosing to donate or not donate reflects underlying character, or lack thereof. You already explained yourself well enough.

Whoa -- is that like a twist on the Godwin syndrome? "Confederate reverence?" You crack me up. And, it's not "intransigence" it's "common sense." But, I see you learned a new word today. That's a plus.

Still, your actions lessen you.

I already explained to you that I chose not to answer your utterly ridiculous questions.

The reason you choose not to answer it is because you realize that to do so, you would have to admit that your entire premise is false. As long as we both know where you're coming from -- go ahead and wimp out.

LOL - Now you are just making me giggle. If donating to a political message board is your litmus test for "character," then you lead a shallow life, indeed. I'm not surprised that it is -- given that you've already displayed a shocking lack of character in your parental dealings with the school board, and in setting examples of respect for authority.

You go right ahead and keep trying to buy friends by donating here -- I may donate here at some point -- but it's highly unlikely that you come close to the donations I make in real life - including money, equipment, and personal labor. If someone has to BRAG about a small donation to a message board, it's pretty certain that he doesn't understand the meaning of true charity.

LOL

I can't wait to see what you pull out of your ass next.

No to dress code.
If my kid has the clothes he wants to wear let him be.

Pull something out of my ass Sister Howard? How unlady like of you! You have way easier access to your own. Now you brag about your philanthropy!

You can go to post #30 in this thread, click on the link and see me addressing the Manatee County School Board. Note my comment to School Board member John Colon.... the one who also works as a Wells Fargo Financial Advisor. He finally admitted to me in a phone call that he doesn't have a college degree.

Look don't do that. Don't put yourself out there like that. Keep your identity private. Go back and delete that post -- or ask a Mod to do it, but don't put yourself at risk. I say that as a person who was once stalked by someone I came across online. It's not a good thing. Delete that. I believe you. I don't agree with you, but I believe you.

Okay?

No, as long as not everyone is wearing just their underwear.

Okay?

Golly gee Miss Howard! I scrubbed my name before I posted the video. If you give the video an honest listen, you might acknowledge my speech aligns with the contents of my DP posts. I use many of the same simple guideposts in DP World as I do in the Real World: Grace, Honor, Humor and Love. Let Love reign Supreme! Children first!

Peace to you and yours!

Are we talking dress codes or outright uniforms? If the former, then yes. If the latter, then no.

People should not be able to wear anything they want to school, for various reasons that people have already mentioned.

Uniforms are often made of cheap material, are uncomfortable, or are sexist. They also don't mean that discipline is necessarily happening or that a school is "better", which is what a lot of people believe when they see children stressed in uniforms.
