A grieving mother orca in J-pod who carried her dead calf for 17 days has let it go.

The whale, called J35 but also known as Tahlequah, was the first in her pod to give birth in three years. The southern resident killer whales are believed to be starving due to declining spring salmon stocks and high marine traffic that interrupts their hunting. There's only 75 southern residents left, so the loss of this female calf is a blow to their prospects for survival.

I saw on TV two orcas killed a whale calf and ate only it's tongue.

Karma's a bitch.

Well, isn't that about the dumbest thing I've read here in a long while.

Some advice- don't use words that you don't know the meaning of. Only makes you look, well, you know...

Complete tangent ... I spent many years in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Was surprising to see the name pop up in your news story.

Bravo to those who are trying to help these whales.

I was saddened to see this story unfolding day by day of her carrying her calf around.

Orcas are absolutely fascinating. Differing pods hunt different creatures and have varying attack styles. Really amazing stuff. Some are specifically great shark hunters and know the tactics of putting a shark to sleep by ramming it to stun it then flip it over on its back and holding in there asleep while the others eat it.
