5 gallon Aquarium

Was looking at plans for a homebuilt propane fired furnace, always got my eyes open for any cast iron vessel that would make a good crucible. Just got done welding a 29 gallon tank stand fro angle iron, came out nice and square. A 29 gallon tank with everything in it will weigh close to 300 pounds so I made it very sturdy. 29 gallons letting go inside would kinda suck.

I actually looked into making soapstone molds and making bronze swords with scrap metal since i often see them sell for 300+ bucks a piece as replicas of bronze age celtic and middle east swords. I doubt it would be a super profitable venture but when I thought of it I thought at how much I could make on ebay selling them, I could atleast break even where my hobby pays for itself and does not cost me money, however I never went through with those plans.

Fyi you can buy graphite crucibles fairly cheap on ebay and amazon, capable of temps for steel. You can also get real crucible holders incase the crucible breaks so it stays far enough away you do not injure yourself. As far as propane it works just fine, however it depends on your resourced available, I can get wood very cheap here or many times free, and charcoal is very easy to make, and even wood fires can melt aluminum with ease.

Yeah, a spilled crucible could really ruin your day, even just a small amount of liquid or sweat. I melt about 4 to 8 pounds of lead, I use a C clamp vice grip to hold it and I carry it low to the ground (to the anthill) with welders gloves and a face shield and welders jacket. I have a small open face pot metal , play dough mold from the 60's of sea creatures that I melt 2-3 ounces in my bullet casting ladle, I can make a million little lobsters!
