Traveling to southern Utah

Sorry. Headed to the other end of the state. We are going to Roswell to buy a keychain with an alien head on it.

Priorities, you know?

lol... oh lordy.

Roswell... wrapped up neatly on Drunk History.

Unfortunately Comedy Central are being dicks as they are wont to do and have pulled the whole video for now.

 loved that. I love Patton Oswalt and Tom Lennon.

Well let me know when you are around. I could point out the best food spots and some really cool lesser known historical facts.

I'll do that next time we had that way. It's the only city we've traveled to more than once in the past few years not on business. We get close, and then make a point of getting there. Last time I took a cooking class and learned how to make tortillas from Masa flour, and haven't bought pre-made ones since. It's simple and about 10 times better. Previous to that we did the art gallery tour, and the place that stuck with me was a fine woodworking/furniture shop. That's a hobby of mine and those pieces were just amazing to me - pieces of art with price tags to match. $14,000 for a simple side table is one I remember seeing. We thought "Hey, that's a nice piece. Maybe we'll have it shipped home!" Checked the price, then :inandout:

The prices here are ridiculous for art. Lots and lots of artsy fartsy types here. Art markets all through the summer. The biggest is the Indian Market. That's the BIIIIG money market there.

If you visit Arches National Forrest, Then you won't be far from Moab UT. Cute little town to spend a few hours at. Also since you are in that area, you should go to Dead Horse Point,, Grand canyon like views but no one seems to go there... We where there in the middle of summer and had the place to ourselves.. You park, walk 50 feet and look.. You go right past it on the way to canyon-lands.

I have heard that the Angels landing hike in Zion is amazing!! though somewhat dangerous. I have that on my to do list.

Get in shape ( if not already) you will do a lot of hiking.

Zion is beautiful as well.

Take lots of pictures, always makes for great memories..

Thanks for the tip! I will have to look out for Dead Horse Point.

We did the hike and it looks a lot more dangerous than it really is. The trails are narrow, and a slip in a few places could mean falling a few thousand feet down to your death, but there are chains everywhere in the narrow sections to hold onto, the trail is fairly flat and well maintained, and I wasn't ever worried about falling. Our group had people as old as 75 in it, and we all made it fine. It was a biking trip so we were all in decent shape, but it's nothing to worry about. You might decide to butt-slide down a few parts on the return...

Bottom line is the hardest part is deciding to do the last bit. Once you get started, it's a very cool and beautiful experience.

I'm guessing there was a major contributing factor to all the major accidents there. Ice, carelessness, going off trail, etc. One member of our group was a very fit 25-30yo or so, and she did some one legged yoga poses right on the edge at the top. The picture was pretty cool, but that's how you fall - one bad slip and it's several hundred feet from there to the next ledge.

Is it in that same area? Does that literally mean "green table?"

It's a national park. Mesa out here is used to describe flat top mountains. Flat top like a table top.. Mesa Verde is ancient cliff dwellings in the sides of the flat top mountain walls there.

It's in the four corners region.

If you go south from four corners region there are the ice caves and near that is Inscription Rock. Look that up. There's also meteor crater. It's rather expensive to drive that far to look at a big hole IMO but impressive nonetheless.

Monument valley is in the four corners area. Just inside new Mexico on I-40 near Gallup there is chaco canyon.

Also near Farmington NM there are the Aztec ruins park. Kind of the four corners area. It's indian ruins but they are not literal Aztec Indian ruins. Causes confusion.

Hubs talked about meteor crater. Maybe we can add an extra day into the trip and hit these places. We aren't in a huge rush to get back.

I wanted to see the four corners area, but it was so far away from Roswell, and he really wanted to go to Roswell. Don't know why we can't do both.

It's a lot of driving. But those are all really great sites.

Hey y'all - planning a trip in a few weeks to southern Utah, in the canyons area. Plan on making the trip from Vegas up to Bryce Canyon, the Arches, Canyonlands, etc. Once we get away from Vegas, we'll be a few hours into the area.

My question is this - I assume it's very touristy? As I've never been there, I'm not sure - are there lots of hotels in the area? Don't want to get that deep into the area and have to scramble for a place to sleep. Hope to be able to spend one night there - maybe more.

Say hi to my folks when you're there. They've gone every year for the last 15ish or so years for 5-6 weeks at a time. Go about mid april and stay till end of may.

Really not much to Roswell. Medium sized city. If you are in that area then go to Lincoln county and do the Billy the kid museaum stuff. Stay at the inn of the mountain gods in Ruidoso. That's pretty. White sands is bizarre and neat to see.

Well that's kind of why we are going. It's just going to be him and me. We are going to get away from everything and also kind of considering it a "photography" road trip. He's a photographer, so this is his dream vacation. Me? I just like road trips. Even to nowhere. I like stopping at Flying Js, and all the funky little restaurants along the way.

But yeah, the driving should be OK. It's one of the things we are looking forward to. That being said, I may revisit this conversation after we've been on the interstate for 10 hours.

That's awesome! Yeah we can't stay that long. I don't get out of class until 4/29, and then I have an appointment on 5/7. I was going to go after my last class, but this appointment in May popped up that I can't get out of, so we are leaving then. Hope to be gone 2 or 3 weeks, anyway.

White Sands is near there? Definitely want to go there. Thanks!

Seriously... Let me know if you two are near santa Fe. The wife is a history buff of the area and we know great food stops.

It's extremely sun reflective. Make sure to have sunglasses and sunscreen.

You'll be there getting sun soaked but then look at your pictures and look like you were standing in snow.
