I arrived here in March last year. This was my first contact with a forum related to politics. I had some experience with other boards with topics not relating to politics. My experience with these other boards has given me exposure to trying to get a 'handle' on people with only an avatar, username and posting style/content. When I first was accepted here my style ran a little warm. I found I was easily triggered and all too quick to run down 'rabbit holes.' As time passed and 'You Have Received An Infraction' PM's piled up, I was able to better manage my posting style. I have made some connections and the opposite of that as well. I spell better, compose better and research better than I did one year ago. The reason for this post is that I have a contentious relationship with one of my siblings and they are all too familiar with the proper 'buttons' to push for a desired effect. The relationship has been dormant for a few month, but started up again yesterday via e mail. In the e mail there was some 'button pushing' going on and I commented to my missus that my 'training' here had given me new insight as to my triggers points. Well, I credit DP with this new angle of looking at things and my ability to roll with the flow!
I'm a mod on the oldest political forum on the internet, and the moderation is even more strict than it is here in some ways.
However, almost every OTHER forum aside from this one and the one I help moderate is damn near a free-for-all, or an echo chamber where you get banned if they don't like your politics.
So, coming in here, it was also an adjustment for me as well. I was too hot-headed, I admit it!
I like to think that I learned quickly however, but it also needs to be said that there are members who learned quickly, how to troll JUST enough to get others to commit faux pas and get pinched.
That is something which you can't get away with on the old timer forum I work at.
I generally don't bounce anyone, my mod tasks are more nuts and bolts, but the point is, DP is different than most of the other forums. It is a lot closer to Capitol Hill Blue, and probably has a membership about twenty times larger.
How is CHB more strict? We generally don't allow you to address elected officials by anything other than their proper names.
We've loosened it a tiny bit but you cannot get away with calling President Obama "Obummer" or calling Trump "Vile Pig Bladder", just as an example.
We're also a wee bit tighter on troll control...if you're not contributing and moving the thread in some constructive direction, you'll hear about it. We don't have infraction points. You just get a PM letting you know what's up.
It's a smaller forum, so there's more individual attention.
I will have to credit DP for the same reasons you are, it's helping me take a fresh look, and they really do mean it when they ask for civility. CHB is warm and civil, too...we're pretty much a close knit family.
Oh yeah, we can use real names, a lot of us do. That's because a lot of us know each other in real life, too!
It just happened over twenty some years!
Cheers, mate.
