Any Botanists or amatuer plant experts in the house? Can you explain this?

From 2 tomato plants, I gave away many as me and the wife could not eat all of them. The bell peppers were overshaded by the tomatoes and 2 plants produced little. The tomato plants got over 5 ft tall. It got down to 26 degrees a while back. I had 4 bed sheets over them and anywhere the sheets touched, they burned and were pruned. Likely my yield was 20% reduced.
