I need a gift for a 5-and-a-half year old and am stumped. I've learned that "Star Wars" Legos are all the rage, so that's my fall-back. Mom doesn't want any more Legos around, and I get it.

The little boy is interested in nature (and his mom loves bugs), so I've already given him an age-appropriate microscope and a few age-appropriate Giant Microbes (https://www.giantmicrobes.com/us/ ). For Christmas I bought him a brain Jello mold and also a hand mold, and these are bitchin'. I also gave him a fart machine that looks like remote and makes 15 sounds. So disgusting. He loved it and "thrilled" his parents for days. Mission accomplished.

So any ideas for a cool little gift?

One of my grandsons favorite gifts at that age was a ( fort building kit) I don’t know of any boy or girl that doesn’t like building a fort.

Amazon has kits as do other sellers, it really depends on your budget. Just go into amazons search function for play fort kits.

How about that tent thingie that goes over their bed? I think it's called a dream tent...

Yes, they do make those but they can be pricey, it also takes away from the building experience. Fun story,I have a friend in the moving and shipping business, he gave me four xxx-large cardboard boxes (refrigerator size) with a few rolls of tape with dispenser for my kids many years ago.

The kids didn’t get the fun aspect at first, it wasn’t until I unfolded the boxes and sealed one end up did they get it. The glazed look in there eyes was spooky, that fort stood for more than a month in my family room and there wasn’t an inch that wasn’t decorated with crayons and markers on the inside or outside.

I'm assuming that fireworks are out of the question?

It's been a while since I was 5 but right about that age anything related to cowboys, soldiers or dinosaurs was top shelf. Rockets were also pretty cool. I LOVED my Erector Set and Weebles were the new big thing. Hot Wheels cars may not be as big a thing as they were back then but it's worth a shot. I'm not sure what kind of budget you have in mind but slot cars never go out of favor.

I could never get enough Legos when I was a kid. Constantly building up fleets of ships, destroying them, rebuilding, etc.

Of course, around that age I discovered computer games. ("Rogue!" "The Dungeon Revealed", Zork, etc.).

[ok ok, I couldn't play Zork particularly well at that age. I mainly amused myself by typing "/fart" and seeing "you fart loudly" pop up on the screen, then going off to get eaten by a Grue].

Hot Wheels, yes, I remember those.

I had this set of wooden blocks of various sizes. 2.5 foot long slats a few inches wide and only 1/3 thick, down to simple cubes. Friends and I would first build up a sort of fort or "level" with the blocks. Then, I had these little army figures from the middle ages. So we'd make up a set of rules for how many moves per turn, range, accuracy (die rolls) of the various pieces, set them down, and battle it out.

Oh, and remote-controlled cars. Always loved those.

Not quite at 5, but model rockets were great fun. Have to have somewhere to set them off though with plenty of room for them to land (especially since the parachute may not open if you pack it incorrectly)

Lincoln Logs and TinkerToys.

Thank you for the tip! I found the brain and hand molds and the fart machine all on Amazon. The brain mold is soooo cool!

I gave him a few Hot Wheels too after making sure that, unlike my own son, he doesn't immediately take the wheels off (grr). What do you call the part that has a bar between two wheels? Whatever it is, it's almost as painful to step on in the dark than a little Lego. Ah, memories....!

Get him an ant farm. Next year you can get him a magnifying glass.

You have to tailor it to the boy's tastes and I dunno what this particular kid likes. But in general, boys that age love cars, trucks, Star Wars stuff, toy soldiers and guns (if parents don't disapprove), anything that makes noise and or is "gross" (e.g., the brain mold and the fart machine) especially if it annoys adults, etc, etc. Really not that difficult.

It depends on the kids interest. I am known for crazy gifts that usually turn out great. When my nephew was 5 he liked to draw. I got him a Spirograph. But I am an opportunity buyer. He was interested in small wildlife. I was at the library and they were selling off old books. I got a couple of giant books of birds, amphibians, and of course the dinosaur cheap. Great big pictures with descriptions.

I made him a tangram out of wood blocks. They have them on Amazon.

Everyone thought it was too confusing for a little kid. WRONG. He figured it out quicker than a lot of the adults. Challenge that brain.

The best gift I ever got my nephew is this 4 wheeler. He was very big for his age and again everyone said he was too young. Here he is at 7 but he has been riding this for over 2 years. He even has a cart he pulls behind with it. My brother made it with him. He can back it into a shed where he keeps it. It has 2 speeds. It goes very slow on low speed. I like this model because his leg and feet are not toughing the ground. I was worried about him running over his leg with some of them. Notice how he stays in the mud.

This is a little more fun than a microscope because everyone can see it on TV.
This was a bit hit when i sent it to my wife's daughter's two kids at that age.
It magnifies like a microscope but shows it on the TV so everyone can see it.
The girl got interested in science because of it, and hey, for only $30. Win win.
Let me get you the link.

It opens them up to a whole new world they had never seen before.

I really appreciate the ideas everybody's offering; I'm always going to need for ideas for this little boy, who's as close to a grandchild as I will ever have. I want to be his fairy godmother and grandmother. Those of us who were lucky had somebody in our lives when we were kids like that, and I want to be that person for this little boy.

Thank you all, and keep 'em coming please!

My youngest has always loved nerf guns and accessories. Their longevity is amazing, too. He and his friends were still playing with them until they were 13.

I have a feeling the 'rents won't agree, sigh.

Get him a pooter to go with the fart machine. He can entertain the neighbors.

Using the key words "cool" and "Mom doesn't want," I suggest headphones for toddlers with parental controlled volume limiters for ear safety. 80db should be the maximum volume deliverable. Most run well under $25. I've bought them for my grandkids with devil's horns on the ear pieces. Fitting.

Many different designs are on the market, Amazon is a good place to start looking. Mom will be forever thankful.
