Autism in our Society

It's the world we live in and I'm really deciding if I want to keep playing along. I'm getting tired of the crap.

Stick around.
It can get better. You're going to have to put in extra effort but it can get better.

Again “official” it’s one doctors opinion. Just like depression and ADD that have exploded in diagnosis, autism has no definitive test and seems to have an ever growing list of diagnosis criteria especially among the high functioning kind

Just stop, please, okay?
There are official autism tests and diagnoses, where are you getting this information from?
I already asked if YOU were on the spectrum, and you haven't responded to the question.

Question....
Where are the parents?
Hopefully they are helping their kids deal with their problems assimilating with the rest of the world instead of expecting that world to do it for them. Or worse, some parents enable bad behavior and then when the crap hits the fan they look for a medical diagnosis to shift the blame.
I have had neighbor kids whose actions were disturbing and the parents response was "it is just a phase". Setting fires in another neighbors garage is not a phase. Another kid obsessed with military style weapons stabbed someone in the hand, the knife was a birthday present. If your kid is a bit off, or going through a phase, you don't buy him commando style weapons, or leave weapons where the kid can get to them.
Passive parenting won't do the job. Letting them do whatever they want won't help them. Getting society to help is more likely if the parents are actively doing what they can themselves. I could write pages about this issue, from an observers perspective.
When I go to parents and warn them about things I see or hear in their kids lives that appear dangerous, and get excuses, and they do nothing about it, my only recourse is to warn the police.

I know I'm trying. I have very good IT skills up to the point where I can get hired and earn a middle class income but due to something I had no control over, I couldn't get in.

I have a full time job instead in plastic injection molding and only got in due to connections. I think I mentioned it before but my boss and co workers even texted my dad basically pointing out things that describe those with Aspergers but because people don't bother educating themselves about their fellow humans, they don't know I have it. If they found out, I could even get fired.

That's the thing UtahBill my dad even had teachers, counselors suggest that I'm on the spectrum due to my behavior but he didn't bother to get me diagnosed. I'm now 22 and got diagnosed not to long ago. I had to seek it out myself and I'm lucky to even have a full time job. I lack the social skills like reading between the lines, reading facial expressions, reading body language, social cues etc all the social stuff that comes naturally to you it doesn't to me. I have to actually research it and try to mimic what comes naturally to humans. My dad and mom knew but didn't bother to do their responsibility and getting this all done sooner.

Canada has even stricter laws about discrimination than we do. If they found out, and fired you, you'd have a solid case for wrongful termination.

Good for you....even those of us who are "normal" often find that you are your own best advocate.

My son taught 8th grade science for a long time. He says the autistics loved it. There was one year that for some reason had enough kids to put all the autistics in one class period. It was very interesting.....

Back when I was growing up, we had a different name for Autism. It wasn't 'diagnosed' as extensively as it is now. We called it 'being a nerd'

Aspergers people often ended up being called the nerds, while full blown autism was often misdiagnosed as mental retardation, even though it was far from it.

However now you make me want to watch revenge of the nerds.

That's another thing I want to add people with autism on the higher end usually are more intelligent then the general population so I take it that's where ''being a nerd'' was all about? Or is it because most of us gravitate towards being really good with computers and engineering?

I think the computer and engineering aspect comes down to social awkwardness, not being as socially accepted causes people to focus their brainpower elsewhere, and often they find like minded people there where they can interact. However this is not always the case, dan akroyd had aspergers, and he bacame an actorm with aspergers many do grow out of it, as aspergers is on the autism spectrum but not enough where those with it are unaware, my brother has autism, U have also known people with autism and aspergers, they generally are the social awkward nerd, and over time they literally become self aware of their own condition and adapt themselves to society, full blown autism however the people who have it never manage to merge in, and many seem like they live in a different plain of existence like they are unaware of what they have.

That is true. That is why the modern classifications call it a 'spectrum.' There have been some people who full blown autism that do not have the ability to communicate verbally, but have learned how to communicate via the computer, which is a tool that was not available years ago/

As evidenced by the brilliant, smart and often very funny interview questions posed by Carly Fleischmann, we're only just now becoming aware of what goes on in the minds of people with severe autism.

But here's something everyone needs to know about autism.
It's not mental retardation, it's not mental illness and it's not a psychological issue at all, it's a neurological condition.

And not everyone on the spectrum views everything about their autistic disorder as a curse, either.
For some, there are things about their disorder that they have managed to turn into something of a blessing at the same time.

Those persons on the spectrum with Asperger's Syndrome are up against "concern troll" activists who seek to remove AS from the spectrum and from the DSM.
The reason they want to remove it from the DSM is so that benefit providers can stop paying for it.
Autism movements who are prolific in promoting such a cause are working against those with autism.

Why is it that having autism is often looked down on in our society? I went in for a official diagnosis and I'm high functioning and I now understand why I been getting the treatment that I have for years now and the reason why I came close plenty of times to just...... you know. It sucks and since most of the population can't be bother to educate themselves about it, I feel I been getting discriminated against. It starts with how children and teenagers go about bullying those with it and making jokes about it and once adulthood comes it gets much more worse.

Those high functioning can usually hold full time jobs but can't obtain them due to how hard it is for us to read body language facial expression social cues etc you know all the social things that come naturally to humans it doesn't to us.

Would you rather be one of the stupid ones or the clever but not diplomatic?

People still say that I am different, stuff still passes right over my head sometimes, little subtle cues might get missed occasionally, but I can interact with people and don't have a lot of the typical aversions to new social settings, or to crowds in the same way that a lot of people on the spectrum have.

One thing that they have found out is that early intervention and training help quite a bit. It doesn't stop the underlying difference, but allows the person to compensate and learn those isies.

Me, I get triggered in crowds after 3 hours. I can set my watch by the time I enter a crowd situation and the 'let me get out of here' kicks in.

That was me as a kid but ever since my youthful experimentation with psychedelics, crowds don't bother me in the slightest.
I am definitely more of a people person now ever since.
I just got back last night from an evening out, in Topanga, CA.
I was at a local restaurant known for having big crowds, but it felt like a homecoming, as I hadn't been back to Topanga since the 90's.
It was refreshing, almost soul cleansing, in fact.
