This is right there with Joe Cocker's "You are so beautiful", IMO. Like my short tune up-thread, there's just something special about being able to condense a tune into two or three perfect minutes, with no waste and no extras!

I can still play this on piano, while my buddies liked to play it on guitar.

As far as non-love songs go, yeah this might be as good as it gets! Lennon's best, no doubt.
 
Many great choices, but the previous suggestions are far too limited to our living generational experience. For me, the greatest corpus of moving songs were written mostly before I was born; the great American songbook written by the great composers.

Starting with Summertime. There are many great recordings, some classics like Ella and Louie, or Janis Joplin. But I picked out one a bit truer to its origins in Porgy and Bess...

 
And one from the greatest musical every written .... Showboat (Kern and Hammerstein):

Let me bring it back on track with this classic. The is my favourite version of this Van Morrison classic. And yes, I feel it's so much better than Brown Eyed Girl and I believe Van Morrison would agree.
