Married teacher charged over 'sexual relationship' with pupil

True but that's where faith comes in...

I have great faith in pain, and once we decide that fantasy TRUMPS reality only pain can bring us back usually.

BIG PAIN IS COMING TO THE RESCUE!

Some random thoughts...

1) Was the student male or female? Given that she was a cheer coach, makes me wonder. Just curious.

2) She's cute.

3) It is entirely possible that it was the student who initiated it. Wouldn't excuse her, but it would mean she's not a predator, either. Realistically, not legally.

4) She's married, eh? Hmmm...

5) Why do some have rose colored glasses and think this type of thing almost never happened when they were younger? It most certainly did. Difference is, back then, unless you lived in that town, you'd have never heard about it.

6) If a 23/17 relationship would be legal outside school, then she's not a predator anyway. It's just the power dynamic that is violated.

Well , dismal as her teaching career seems now she could always go into politics and probably win an office.

Don't allow 20 year olds to teach almost 20 year olds.

Problem solved.

I don't about the US sates but in Canada that would still be considered predatory because the teacher is in a position of power over the student.

A 17 yr old student can be very predatory in his own right. That's why laws like this make no sense. Since it's not something than can be allowed at the school, she should, of course be terminated. But, in order to believe the "position of power" thing, we have to believe that a 17 year old male is not sexual in his own right and that he did not pursue the female. At any rate, unless they can show that it wasn't consensual, then I don't think the woman should be labeled a sexual predator. I don't really think that label fits in this instance.

Really disappointed in the actions of Mrs. Ridenhour. She should know better especially considering the college she just graduated from.

That being said the mistakes of this young women will practically ruin her career and life. Is it fair for her to be labeled a sexual predator the rest of her life? As a society we need to find a better solution to help these teachers.

A 23 year old should have never been teaching high school. The age discrepancy is not nearly great enough. I'm not excusing her behavior but that was a really poor decision made by the school's administration.

I think I missed the part that said the student was male. Could be female, especially given that she was a cheer coach.

Doesn't surprise me that it would be a foreign publication that would be more complete in its reporting.

Yeah, what is with that? It's like our media picks and chooses which bits of a story are relevant to us.

This is horse****. All my teachers looked like Mrs. Doubtfire.

I agree that what she did is disappointing but I do not believe teachers should be subject to different laws than others. 17 is not a minor. 17 is able to consent. If that 17 year old boy dated a 23 year old woman who was not a teacher, it would not be an issue.

I think the school has every right to fire her -- and they should. But, she should be treated as any other 23 year old woman who dated a 17 year old.

In NC, the age of consent is 16, but there's also an age-gap rule of four years. There's a six-year difference here, so any 23-year-old would be busted, too.

Also, teachers are held to a different standard because of their position of influence and authority over students. Schools have in loco parentis, so it's a heightened responsibility.
