I learned that a blood sugar of 470 is bad.
I learned that I am diabetic.
I learned hospitals suck(just got home though, was admitted Thursday).
I learned my lifestyle is going to be a changin'.

I'm assuming you're Type 2. If so, yes, you'll be seeing some lifestyle changes but it's not all that bad.

#1 Exercise. For me it's the hardest change to make because my job ties me to a desk. The good news is that it doesn't take much to make a huge difference. Get out for a half hour in the morning and a half hour at night just walking and you'll see a dramatic change.

#2 Sugar. It's in freaking everything. I was blown away that even beef jerky has sugar in it. The good news is that after getting through the first couple of weeks where you're on straight rabbit food you can still have steak, bacon, cheese and lots of other "real" food.

#3 If you play by the rules (generally speaking) you'll soon find that you sleep better and have more energy. You'll also find a ton of stuff to eat that won't mess you up. If you like pasta you know it's off your list but Trader Joe's has a whole wheat pasta that tastes pretty good and isn't $5 a pound. Paul Newman has some great tasting salad dressings with no sugar.

#4 Snacks. Sorry, but you're screwed. The Oikos Triple Zero yogurt is decent. String cheese gets old quickly but it serves the purpose. Cheese and Triscuits works OK. You can add some Boars Head "Salsalito" style chicken without messing yourself up.

#5 If you stick to the necessary changes you'll feel a whole lot better and stave off some nasty effects.

Good luck!

I’m so sorry. And yes! Hospitals suck wind. I don’t know much about diabetes, but I’m thinking that 470 number was life-threatening. Holy crap. I’m very glad you’re back at home. Hope this finds you all cocooned in a soft blankie and comfy, thinking about your new diet and how much better you’re going to feel in a week or two after your new lifestyle begins to really kick in.

God’s got that pie-in-the-face thingie down to an absolute science.

Well that sucks, hope you can get things stable without too much trouble. Are you diagnosed as type 1 or 2 Redress? I'm assuming type 2 due to your age?

If there's one positive I can say is that whilst diabetes is obviously a serious disease, there have been fantastic advancements in technology and diabetes management over the years.

You could have a lot worse things. The diet is the hard part, but it will likely do you lots of good in more ways than the one. You're going to have give up the captain's platter at the Buccaneer, or B and J's, or wherever it is you get your fix.

Aww man! Bummer news! But at least its news with some time to work with to manage it.

Lutherf's post seems like he's there too, and I implore you to heed good advice. Diabetes is nothing to screw around with. A close family friend didn't, and didn't last long, went blind in the process.

Take it seriously, and from your post, seems like you are. I'm glad.

Best wishes, and please, stay well.

Type 2, and things have already gotten worlds better. I just need to manage my diet and ****. But I feel better than I have in a couple years.

You had it easy. I hit the hospital with a blood glucose of nearly 1300 and spent a week in intensive care. That was more than 20 years ago.

Dude. They aren't nearly cool enough to know about those places.

Fortunately for us, we are. ;) I used to be a huge fan of Pelican Point, but they went downhill so fast.

That's great, Red! One of my cousins has Type 2 as well, and she's been doing just fine.

Yeah, the Point didn't stay great for long. Did you ever go to the original Buccaneer before it burned down? The one with the dirt parking lot and a peephole in the door? The replacement is more like a Denny's with a seafood menu. The guys at work like to hit mudcat's for friday lunch about every 6 weeks.

sorry to hear the bad news, Redress. good luck with your lifestyle changes, and i hope that it isn't too much of a shock to the system.

Damn Red??? I am glad you are OK. Mine was 800+ and the doctors freaked, lol. So you hang in there and you will be just fine. I have been a type 2 for going on 30 years now.

Be good!

No I never got to the old one. The new one isn't terrible, but not worth that long drive from where we live. My favorite seafood place was shut down. I used to go to Bottom Feeders about once a week.

I started making my own pasta sauce several years ago when I learned how much sugar jarred store-bought sauces have in them.

Wow, I wondered where you were. I've been fretting... apparently with good reason. Lifestyle changes can be minimal for Type 2 Diabetes once you have it under control (my husband was diagnosed many years ago), but it's nothing to fool with when your blood sugar spikes that high. Take care of yourself, okay? :kissy:

And in the south, for shame I tells ya!!! hardest thing for diabetics in the southern us is giving up sweet tea, though some cheat and do half cut tea. I could probably write a blog on how life will be hell, but my father was hypoglycemic then later diabetic and he ate almost all the same stuff minus sugar like candy and sodas.

My friends grandfather died from rediculous bloodsugar, thing is he had no idea he was even diabetic, and loved doctor pepper. One day he drank a whole 24 pack in a day and acted normal until he went to sleep and did not wake up, from what coroners figured his blood sugar was well over 1000 when he died, which was well beyond life threatening. My grandmother has diabetes that is extremely hard to control, for her even with diet and exercise they keep cutting off toes and not too long ago her foot, she is still kicking but her diabetes is a very strong case of, and has given her many circulatory problems.

Sorry to hear that. Tough situation that. I can only hope that she can keep the best quality of life given her health challenges.

I gave up sweet tea immediately after first tasting that abomination.

Reading and watching many about diabetes and food. I learned that diabetes type two is reversible if you adept a vegan eating style. Diabetes type 1 is not reversible but still the person has a big improvement with vegan diet.

Many doctors and professionals talk about too many fruits is bad because fruits has fructose (sugar), but in fact fruits you can eat as much as you can that will not be bad for you.

Sugar is bad but what makes is stock in your blood system is fat. Reason why avoiding milk, meet, cheese, olive oil, etc can reverse diabetes type 2.

I am not a doctor nor have I worked near in the area of health, but it is what many independent professionals are saying. But in this case she says fat is good and carbohydrates are bad. But she claims to cure many people from diabetes 2:

But here the guy explain why fat block the entrance of insulin into the muscle cell.

I could not edit the post above but the conclusion is that in the first video, diet with less carbohydrates or none at all reduce insulin production in your system. Good for those with diabetes 1 and 2 but specially 1.

In the second video is about how you can eat sugar and produce as much as insulin as you want if you don't eat fat, because without fat the insulin can freely get into the cells that is not blocked anymore by the fat. Good for diabetes 2.
