For real car guys

I always like the Dodge Super bee.

Waaay back in the dark ages, when I was attending college, I had the occasion to be required to appear in traffic court in North Carolina. The judge was ancient, and blind. A speeding case came up, and the judge read the charges, which included speeding (143 in a 25 mph zone) and property damage consisting of the destruction of about a dozen mailboxes and a power pole. The arresting officer said that the defendant did stop for a stop sign two blocks away from the damage before the incident occurred. The judge was nearly dumbfounded. He asked the the defendant, "Good Lord - 143 mph in two blocks? What kind of car does that?" The defendant replied, "Soopah Bee."

Would you really have wanted a Corvette Grand Sport, back in that year?

It seems like a highly impractical car.

So is the datsun, I'm 6'3, but I still want one, always have. The grand sport, if for nothing more than tearing it up at the track 3-4 times a year. Street legal race car, and dead sexy to boot. Most would have no real idea of what it is, as they appreciate the view of receding tail lights. Its the closest thing to Duntovs dream that was made prior to his death. A true sports car (even if not mid engine), by European definition...a road going car that is ready to and can race.

OK, you are you but you are back in each of the years listed.

What new car would you go buy, either by ordering it or off the lot.

Here is my list.

1963 - Plymouth Sport Fury 2 Dr HT
1964 - Pontiac Tempest with the GTO option
1965 - Chrysler New Yorker 2 Dr HT
1966 - Pontiac Grand Prix - The most beautiful car ever made
1967 - Cadillac Eldorado
1968 - Ford XL GT
1969 - Chevrolet Impala 427 With Covered Headlights
1970 - Cougar Eliminator
1971 - Thunderbird Suicide Doors
1972 - Buick Skylark Sun Coupe
1973 and up there is nothing interesting

Now remember, these are cars you would have liked to drive.

Don't choose cars because they would be worth a lot of money in the future, you wouldn't have known that.

Out the choices there I would pick the 1972 - Buick Skylark Sun Coupe. But I actually chose a 1973 Oldsmobile Omega in real life. I am putting in a 402 BBC, Richmond 4 speed.

I owned a 65 Ford Falcon, a 66 Mustang, a 71 Plymouth Satellite Sebring, and a 69 Chrysler Newport Custom. Loved em all. The Falcon was not a muscle car...the straight 6 nothing fancy. But the lines...it was just a beautiful car. I miss the old cars. Someday I'd like to open a business just for working on those old garage junkers that people were going to restore but never got around to.

I couldn’t find any with the L88 but heres a 427 Yenko

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/chevrolet/1969-chevrolet-camaro-copo-427-yenko-ar129621.html

“All of this muscle develops into a respectable 5.4-second 0-to-60 mph time. It also zips this Yenko Camaro through a quarter-mile track in just 13.5 seconds at 105 mph.”

And for comparison a Ford Fusion sport, sporting a V6

“The Fusion Sport’s real charm is all beneath those surfaces. The power translates to a dash to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.7 at 101 mph.”

Tested: 2017 Ford Fusion Sport ? Review ? Car and Driver
Yes - but the real test, is:

On Saturday night when you're leaving one bar or party to go to the next, which one do the girls want to go in?

The one with the heated seats, power doors/windows, navigation system, Sirius radio and the one that they would survive a car wreck in.

Those aren't the type I want for a fun Saturday night!

But if you want to bring her home to mom, fine enough! :2razz:

Friend of mine just bought a 66 T-Bird. Nice. He got it for a really good price. But now he's finding out why. The car has a bunch of little nagging problems that's driving him crazy. lol

Nothing big, yet! Runs pretty good, the Carb is touchy, but what Carb isn't. Best thing ever was fuel injection, Carborators suck. He told me about the Carb on this T-Bird and I just started laughing, but he did find someone who said he'll tear it apart, clean it and adjust it. I remember doing that back in the day. Nightmare.

That is all I drive. The newest car I have is a 2000 Durango to tow a car trailer.

I have been driving a 1972 Ford LTD for some months now.

Now that I am older I now understand why older people always bought Cadillacs and Lincolns.

That was never a consideration for me. If the woman didn't like my old car, she can stay standing on the curb.

There is nothing like driving, or even riding in, a 1966 T-Bird. That wrap around rear seat is so luxurious.

That is my favorite year of that car. The full length tail light with the sequential turn signals are the best.

Yeah, just messing around.

But during my biking days, in the places I hung at, the women always picked the Harley over the Rice Burners. And yeah, they'd go for the Camaro without a doubt.

Maybe they're not everyone's type of girls, but they're the ones I liked to party with on a Saturday night.

American Motors' AMX.
1963 Ford Falcon.
1970 Ford Torino.
1971 Plymouth Duster.
1950 Pontiac.
All standard shift.

Yeah, it was an (sp?), but I never liked or respected those things. Finally bought a new vette in 2000, and it's (still have it) a 6 speed, though the 6th is just and overdrive gear for the highways. 6th works great, though. I can get 32mpg on the highway. Just don't stomp it and expect anything, lol...

Drop to 4th, stomp, and you'll get a rush.

My first car. Slant 6 banger / 3 speed. VERY used. Good car, but not a racer by any means.

I was joking about the "thingie" suffix. You spelled it right, though.

The smallblocks got the turbo-350, and the big blocks got the turbo-400. The 350 was a better shifting trans, but the 400 had a higher torque rating. I've had both, and preferred the 350. As that era autos go, it was pretty good IMO. The old 2 speed auto was the "Powerglide". I never liked it, but it was often used by bracket racers due to it only shifting once, and doing it very accurately and repeatable.

I have the carb for one.... On top of whats left of a 454 Chevrolet.
An old Rochester Quadrajet?

You must be a stickler for original parts, since so many guys swapped them out for Holley Double Pumpers. A Double Pumper and a set of headers, were usually considered mod #1. And for good reason! Very effective and a good value. The old GM cast iron stock headers really kept the power locked up! And they were heavy! But quiet.

Used to hit all the car dealers around town as a kid when the new models arrived. The Mopars were my favorites with Chevy a close second. I remember an orange 1970 Superbird w/440, 6pack at the local Plymouth dealer and it just sat on the lot for months unsold and finally they parked in on the street to get it out of the way. I always felt bad for that car and still regret not being able to buy it.

I did have differing times have

66 Pontiac Tempest

66 & 67 Chevelles

67 Mustang Fastback w/ 390 big block

Today I have a 2002 Camaro SS for when I feel the urge to put a sit eatin grin on my face!
It took a lot of guts to list that one! :2razz:
