I had another midterm this week, for my Math in Society class. I didn't do so well on it (I struggle with math, and this unit was really hard for me). Thankfully, my professor gives us the opportunity to do test corrections for a 70, so I’ll definitely be getting that done at some point this weekend. I did do good on the few quizzes I had to take this week. I’ve got my Music Appreciation and History midterms coming up next week, along with my Government paper (which counts as my midterm for that class). But man, the stress can be really ****ing annoying at times. But I’m still having fun. I decided to get high (again) this week w/ my friends, because being sober sucks. Been given a few more offers to “chill” (if you catch my drift), but I’ve turned them all down. Can’t say the same for some of my friends though. One of my friends runs through guys like it’s a ****ing Olympic event. But I am sort of relieved that it’s the end of the week. Planning on going to the bonfire tonight. Never been to one before, so it will be cool to experience that. Probably going to go out drinking after that w/ friends, depends on how I feel about it.

But thankfully, I’ll be going back home next weekend. I’m hitching a ride back with a friend (she lives near my area). My girlfriend has’ decided to come back home too, and we’re both going to one of our friends’ birthday party. I haven’t seen her in what feels like forever, so I really can’t wait. It’ll be nice to just get away from the stress of college for a little bit, and be back home. I also miss messing with my dog (and hopefully we’ll be getting a new dog very soon, we're probably gonna get a Maltese). I just need to stick with it for another week. I can do it.

Have fun young lady - you earned it. :2wave:

"I decided to get high (again) this week w/ my friends, because being sober sucks."

That sounds like the start of a very serious problem

Nah. I don't get high all the time.

Like I said the start of a problem. You should be getting dunk/high/whatever because it's fun and it feels good not because "being sober sucks". You're always going to end up sober and life is only going to get tougher from here better learn how to deal with that without resorting to substances or it will be a problem. Just my advice take it or leave it

That's fine.

I am doing it because it's fun. That little comment was more tongue-in-cheek than serious.

I agree with Crovax, Gov. exploring the possibilities of altering your mind is a worthwhile pursuit..

But, coming from someone who has struggled with alcohol abuse his whole life, addiction will sneak up on you, unless you notice the warning signs early.

I understand. I have a uncle who is an alcoholic, and he's pretty much a deadbeat who doesn't do much of anything.

And when it comes to alcohol, I haven't gotten super drunk in my life. Doesn't really appeal to me to be black-out drunk. So every time I've drank, I've always regulated how much alcohol I consume.

It's all fun and games until it isn't anymore lol.

Noticing warning signs can prevent years of trouble.

Just be careful cause we all think a lot of you.

... like it could be the start...

I read her statement as though she enjoys the experience. We basically all have vices that we enjoy as rewards. In my experience, it is best to limit use as a reward, rather than as a stress response.

I guess i see the "this week" indicating use is infrequent enough to be pretty damned good for a college student, IMO.

Don't worry Winston; I'm always careful.

Two questions, Gov. Does your school have an actual mid-term break?

Also is this your first term? Freshman?

OK so you must live close enough to get home for a couple of days and head back. I was gonna say, I've never heard of a mid-term break. That'd be quacktastic.

The stress will get easier. My daughter is a first-term freshman also, and she's freaking out a little bit because she isn't doing well. I told her that all first-term freshmen struggle a little, and to just relax. Remember - Cs get degrees. Get in, get your feet wet and then start trying to get better grades. Right now, you just have to deal with this pretty massive lifestyle change. Get past that and then worry about doing better.

You'll do fine.

Math is all about exercises. Literally doing every problem in the book, beginning with the examples. It's the only way. I've been very successful in helping my gf's and wives all pass their math classes by getting them to use that method.

Current wife failed algebra in HS. She got an A in college though.

Calamity is right, Guv. Math is a process. You may have to do a problem 10 times, but that 10th time might be the time that you just get it, and then you are good. I struggled with math, too, and ended up with a B+ in college algebra, an A in Probability and Statistics and an A in Quantitative Skills and Reasoning. All are lower level math classes, but my degree only has math as an academic requirement for the degree, so I don't have to have anything other than the Georgia state requirement. But either way - did very well in all those math classes, and for the record? Failed algebra twice in high school.

Try getting tutoring. It helped my middle child, who struggled with math.

I second that.

Man, no lie. I used to get high every day for 30 years. I gave it up about 10-15 years ago. Don't miss it a bit. But, I do wonder how much more I could have accomplished had I never found that crutch.

But, then again, my teen years sucked. Pot actually saved my life. So...there is that.

I agree with others that math is all about practice. I know my university offers walk in tutoring pretty much all day for math so it might be worth it to look into that. I started getting frustrated with my Calc II class, but tutoring has really been a life saver. The good news is that you are just over the halfway point towards completing your first semester. Everything gets more routine, and less stressful, after that.

I live about 3 hours away. I'd probably go back much more often if I had my own car (which I will hopefully get next year). My girlfriend's gonna have to take a flight there and back, since she's all the way in Albuquerque.

And I'd kill for a break right now! I cannot wait for Thanksgiving break!

Thanks for the encouragement, Superfly. :)

I can get through this. It's just gonna take me a little while longer to fully adjust.

What Mr. Peanut said.

Also, you are young, so you probably know this from high school, but Khan Academy is your friend.

It helped me so much, in math and in chemistry.

This is a very, very basic example of how he works, with entry level algebra (like way entry level). Just wanted to show you how he works, in case you've never used Khan Academy before.

Next time you get discouraged, don't. I am a 50 year old undergrad because I got so discouraged, and covered up with life, and work, and bills, and kids, that I walked away from college for years. I am back now to finish, and have less than a year to go. It's hard as hell, girlie. Hell I am older than most of my professors. But I am the first in my family to ever get a college degree, and that has to count for something.

Oh, trust me, this has helped me a whole lot in high school, when I could not understand what the **** my teachers were explaining. But I haven't used it recently. I should really get back to using it more often.
