Do you think it exists? Or everything balances that term out?

Luck is what we call the confluence of opportunity and preparedness. Many opportunities present themselves but not so many are prepared to take advantage of each of them. When we say that someone is lucky what we generally mean is that they are well prepared to take advantage of opportunities.

Luck, as in, a force that causes things to work out for some?

Nah.

**** just happens, some good, some bad, and it's random who it happens too. Wanna call that lucky or unlucky? Fine.

There is no luck, only chaos and randomness that our minds try to shape into meaningful patterns.

And those with which to take on?

SF author Larry Niven speculated on the topic - see the Teela Brown character in Ringworld - & there were a couple of novels & some short stories where he continued to speculate on whether luck was intrinsic to Brown or not. He's an interesting thinker/writer - he's covered a lot of topics that are now current, & thus he's a worthwhile writer.

I think for the most part one makes his own luck. But at times, yes, luck does exist.

There is luck.... and it's a function of random events.... and it can never be counted on, but if you define luck as a collection of random coincidences of good fortune that could even last a lifetime,,,, sure there is luck.... but that "luck can run out any day at any time.

But people can not always know when opportunity knocks. I have gradually learned to know when to take advantage of certain situations. But you must KNOW what that situation is. Remember the if it is a lemon make lemonade saying? But I still have not won the lottery or found the love of my life (at least the next one) despite my body and hairy chest.

I don't believe in luck or fate. They are terms we use to define systems with more variables than we can easily comprehend. Pro gamblers are not lucky, they play probabilities.

I'm going to tell you what I've preached to my kids, since they were little:

"Luck is when opportunity meets preparation."

You cannot recognize opportunity when you are not prepared to do so. How many lottery tickets do you buy per week? How many potential loves do you dismiss without ever expressing your interest in them?

Luck is the residue of design - Branch Rickey

That's what I believe.

I believe in luck. I believe, all other variables aside, some people naturally have more luck than others. I believe luck can be built or diminished with certain practices, some of which are more predictable and effective than others.

There's actually a huge amount of lore on this subject all around the world. It's an area of ethnography that I find really fascinating.
