We’ve become a slander site. Don’t agree with my position? Rarely links. Rarely debate. Too many one liners snarkily trying to discredit “the other guy” being careful not to cross the infraction line. Many of us are nothing BUT partisan hacks.

I’m drawn in with the rest. So I’m not just talking about you, dear reader. The Left = everything Trump does is dead wrong. The Right = everything Trump does is dead on. I see myself as fairer than that. I’m sure others would laugh at that thought.

This site leans heavily liberal, in my opinion. I don’t know why HC lost the election. Can’t imagine. By the political positions on THIS board, she should have won by a mile. At least here, it seems very out of balance to me. I could be wrong, of course, but I don’t think so.

And politicians love it this way! Polarizing the electorate is great for them. “I don’t have to take any blame for the messes we’re in. I can just blame the other guy.” We are the sheeple people talk about. Just about every last one of us. The media leads us by our noses and off we go.

Its very sad. It will be interesting to see how much actual discussion does on in this thread as opposed to snarky one-liners. Perhaps this thread will be an exception. One can always hope.

Discussion?
Do you think you are fair to the other side?
Do you think we lean heavily to the liberal side?
Do you think most of us form our opinions of right or wrong based on the media?

. I see myself as fairer than that. I’m sure others would laugh at that thought.

You're not wrong.

You literally just posted in a thread where someone poked fun at Trump with a "desperate left" comment. Your perception of liberals has horrifically warped how you interpret anything we do.

Laughing at the ****wad doesn't make me "desperate."

Lulz. No, it's not slander. If anything, it would be 'libel', but it's not that, either.

I still see plenty of intelligent discussion on certain, specific topics, from certain specific posters (Visbek, etc...) but what you seem to be talking about is likely more about certain posters who tend to cluster in the same types of threads and chatter back at each other.

Most of the one-liners I see are usually in regards to something that's particularly stupid, dishonest or the like. And most of the time they're deserved.

I don't think we lean particularly left or right, but there is a hard-core group of idiots from both sides who constantly stir the pot.

Chin up, it's not all that bad.

Know what? I think you’re absolutely right about that hard-core group of idiots. Of which, I am occasionally one.

Nah. You're not an idiot. You seem to rationalize a lot of what Trump does, but not as much as you did in the past.

But you and I both could rattle off the members of that select group of tool factories who predictably show up and ruin decent topics and threads. At least, those that have survived the tard-cull to this point.

There is a core group on both sides (although it is larger on the Left) of people filled with hatred and this last election set the flood gates loose....

Who's "we"?

I think I generally am fair to the other side when we have actual debate threads about taxes, gun control, immigration, etc. It seems like the majority of the threads tend to just be red meat at this point. They are either about Trump saying something stupid, or liberals hating America.

I would not say this site leans heavily on the liberal side. In fact, I think there is a good mix of views here. It is generally split between red and blue, but there are a variety of unique posters.

I think the media absolutely warps most of our views on things. A lot of times when I read the sources for threads it only takes one or two sentences before there is an obvious slam against the other side. Maybe today people just tend to read sources that strengthen the position they already have?

I can't agree enough that both major parties absolutely love how big of a divide they have helped create in this country. If you can keep the American people angry at each other politicians can get away with whatever they want.

Thank you for starting this thread, Maggie. I think it's both timely and relevant!

1] I'd like to think I generally am, though as of late I find myself slipping into the pandemonium myself. My biggest problem, is I've become intolerant of those propagating either fake news, or one's personal political characterization. Both of which seem to be much more common, as of late.

2] Not at all. I'd probably call it relatively even.

3] Enough do. Perhaps most. But this place has a fair number that are willing to dig. I'm grateful to them.

Awww, thanks, Tanngrisnir. You’ll always be Tang to mewhen I read your posts. Just like Bodi will always be Bodi. It’s only when I have to use a poster’s name that I realize I’m wrong. ;)

Tool factories.

I try. Sometimes I fail.

I mostly remember avatar pictures. Xena was a new arrival until I eventually realized it used to be whatsherface tech girl from that cop show.

You mean kinda like tweets?

Wait, what?

Tell the truth Maggie, I try to exchange my views with those on both ends.

Then we have certain trolls that read a clear cut post and try to divert away with useless 1 liners.

They use deflection and excuses as, well it happened under Obama. Well Obama is not the President, Trump is, and we are talking about his policies. That is what the OP is about. Not a constant regression into the past to somehow justify Trumps actions.

Will they discuss policies, nope, some will, but that is a rarity

Well I was only here for 2 years of Obama. And yes he had his scandals, as they all do.
When I disagreed, I condemned him, when i agreed I applauded. Such as his staying far away from another ME invasion, Syria. The world would not stand for it, neither would the citizens stand for another war where US blood would be spread.

I fail to understand how anyone can defend Trump all the time. He can do no wrong. He changes policies, a 180 degree change on Medicare, ACA, Social Security, they buy in and blindly go to the keyboard to spread the lines provided by the WH and their Party.

He comes out with a tax plan that will from what we have seen provide a lower rate for the 1 percenters. Increase the deficit to a massive level, and Republicans who were for a fiscal policy and lowering deficits, why they all jump on.

Problems I see are the die hard Trump supporters live, die and defend everything Trumps, tweets, states or tries to pass legislation that is directly counter to all his promises, they lap it up.
And yes, those hard right attacks can be just as tiresome, excepting trump keeps on feeding them from tweets to policies, to personal attacks.

Now would we have the same with Clinton, of course, but not as many sound bites, not as many federal investigations. A clear response to Russian interference in the election, which Trump supporters blow off. 17 Agencies confirmed this, yet to trump this is fake news. To his attacks on Media, to Cabinet members, to the firing of Comey and gloating about it to the Russians in the Oval office the next day.

Then we have others on the Left that attack rump for things that are not really important.

But Trump is a divider, he does not lead, he attacks, for simple little things, that should be left alone.
He is in no way Presidential, his actions, numerous policy reveals, promises thrown aside, this provides more than enough for people to justifiably condemn him.
And in the end, we have the Die Hard Trump supporters that will not accept the slightest criticism of Trump.
The divide in the US has only increased under Trump, and it will only worsen.

You probably think I fall into one of those categories, but what I like to do is point out hypocrisy, and Trump is full of it! I used to be a HUGE GOP party player, not any longer, apparently since every conservative on here has called me a liberal anti-Trump nutcase. Why it's become a bad thing to point out hypocrisy in the eyes of Conservatives who pointed out every bad thing Obama ever did is beyond me. I did both and I get slandered for it? Politics is weird. Conservatives still think that those of us who hate Trump loved Hillary. I didn't see much Hillary love on this board during election time, and the only people who bring her up now are Trump supporters.

I think most people don't understand what a moderate is and they automatically think that all my opinions are supposed to be anti-trump or I formed my opinions because I'm anti-Trump. No my opinions have hardly changed in four years, and I would still vote for Romney over Trump!

1. I think most of the posters on here can't even see the other side's point of view, let alone be fair to them. So they ignore everything that doesn't fit in their world view. It's OK to say you're wrong and I've been pointing that out in regards to the current Republican Agenda ever since Trump took over.
2. Hell no! I think there are way more stupid RWNJs on here then actual SJWs (not just silly nicknames conservatives throw out at anyone they disagree with). There's a reason why I've been able to have saner conversations with liberals than conservatives. One side has become more militant. You don't really see PETA people, or Antifa people on this site now do you?
3. I do not form my opinions based on the media, but I do trust the media more than Youtube personalities, blogs, or clearly partisan sites.

Who are the Democrats?

This site has too many John Cleese and not enough Michael Palin. There are some who are very serious about their posts and I often learn or consider things I may not. The vast majority already know it all and assume every question is a personal affront to them, their family, and their ancestors. Too many posts are started from the perspective--see this story proves I'm right and those who disagree are morons.

There is hardly a veneer of civility because it seemingly has become an art form to imply that someone is a liar and/or a moron without saying it directly. Most are decent people who spend too much time either trying to score points or keeping score. Those are the people who I pity the most because they have become online "small" people who probably need a different hobby.

On moderate you are correct, most cannot understand being a moderate. They stick to the parties lines and pure BS. Both sides have good if not great polices, but the far enders destroy or poison any chances of bi partisanship- The country is greater and will achieve more when both parties can agree on some policies. Yet as we have seen that is the rarity today.
Me- a fiscal Conservative
Social supports for the poor- Liberal
Human Rights such as SSM, Liberal
Working with our NATO Allies - Conservative
Health care for all- Liberal
Working with an opposing party to pass policies good for the country- I am usually in.

True, some members have learned how to insult without incurring an infraction- Yes I am guilty of that, it is rare that I do but yes some trolls earned it.

I try. Sometimes I fail.

aahh hum.. Sometimes, it's the snark that makes it worthwhile

I post as a 59 year old with a formal education as far as the 10th grade, but went on to read many a book about captains and crooks, and I have learned from both of their styles. ;) (thanks Jimmy)

I personally think that some people on here are just freaking vile, (small minority of them) and show up to spread their misery.

Human rights- moderate.

Medicare expansion-- moderate.

Working with NATO-- moderate.

Bipartisan support-- obviously moderate.

Fiscal conservatives aren't the worst. The Trump conservative and social conservative is the worst.

I can work with a fiscal conservative.
