Explosive political debate at work, write ups, etc.

Right after Obama was elected we had an all hands meeting where is was suggested that people keep their opinions on the matter out of the workplace. A little while later I what into the tool room and there is a small group talking and I overhear, "yeah, we gotta get that ni... out of the whitehouse". There were a couple of agreements to that opinion. I just grabbed what I needed and left. There were and still are a few black and white racists in the company who feel free to express themselves, but they are careful about where and when.
When I was moved to an office in engineering, my immediate supervisor, (74 yrs old), started sending me racist and misogynist jokes on email. I don't know why he was of the opinion I would enjoy them. There were addresses both inside and outside the company. Some about Obama were pretty bad. I told him to please not send that kind of stuff to me as I don't want it on my work computer. (he was my supervisor). Anyway he forwarded one and accidentally included the name of a black woman who ran purchasing. Gone the next day.
We still have one engineer who feels the need to gleefully tell everyone he meets in the lunchroom about the latest Hillary story he gets from wherever. Most everyone else keeps their politics to themselves, even if out for a beer on Friday.

And people should not start screaming and yelling when somebody supports and/or compliments the President.

Most of the screaming and yelling in my circle of experience have been anti-Trump people screaming at pro-Trump people. And that seems to be the case in political protests across the country as well. Just make a pro-Trump thread on this board for instance and what happens next is very predictable. But I would also be the first to say that some among conservatives and/or Trump supporters can also act like jerks.

I would dearly love to return to a civil society in which civil give and take is possible and provoking people to scream at and even hate each other is not the way politics is done.

The problem with returning to a civil society is that the president is not civil.

I wonder how many people would be gone the next day for sending out same kind of emails about Trump?

The President is 100% civil with all people of all stripes who are civil with him.

I imagine if it was like the email about Obama, he'd be gone. As an aside, I just realized I haven't seen one inappropriate email since he got canned. Not forwarded to me or discussed by my coworkers anyway.

Your not using civil the way she means it. When the left says civil they mean doing what yhey demand. Any resistence is considered uncivilized.

Yeah im a little taken aback at how freely some people yalk politics at work.

No lie, before the election i was sitting on my doctors examination yable and ehile he was checking me over he started matter of factly yelling me how excited he was about trump running. Now i generally lean right politically but i was taken aback by my dicyor because he did not know this. He just felt like telling me he liked trump.

Come to think of it my lawyer did the same thing to me but he hates trump. Still though both were entirely bad buisiness practices.

Look at how the nfls fans have turned on them. Its a foolish thing to do.

That depends on what you mean by 'civil'. If you mean suck up to his ego, yes. If you mean will disagree with him, then no. He will go off the handle for people who just don't suck up to him.

Well there is that too :)

From everything I have heard from and/or read about the President, he does not surround himself with suckups or 'yes men'. So I think you are probably close to 100% wrong about that.

I know you are.

I know. Probably very few leftists do. But I think the evidence is mostly on my side.

It's not just leftists. A lot of people who voted for him even say he has a bad temper and needs to learn when to keep his mouth shut and not get on twitter.

But, yeah, we are really having an opinionated disagreement. I obviously would say the evidence is on my side.

I don't think I have ever heard or seen what you just described at your workplace, but given the extreme polarization in the nation at the moment, Im not really surprised.

Personally, I find the subject of sex, politics, and religion at the work place a ticking time bomb.....its best left at home.

I was at work chatting with somebody. I think she is a conservative but doesn't like Trump. A girl from another dept walked into the room to use the copier.

The girl in my dept was talking football. The other woman said, "oh, I refuse to watch football right now because of all the protests. They have no business doing that crap. It's so insulting," and she started going into a rant. I don't remember everything word for word, but she is a Trump supporter and mentioned Trump, and that she's proud of Trump. The other girl said, "he's an idiot and the entire thing is stupid."

Then the Trump supporting one turned around pointed her finger in the other's face, and just started yelling. I was standing to the side going...

The girl from my dept was super calm, and was making coffee, opening boxes, etc. and the other woman just kept yelling. I remember her saying that Trump has a right to free speech and she has a right to not watch the games, and protest the disrespect of the country. The other girl was just really calm and said, "I have a right a watch football."

They kept at it for a while, and when the Trump supporter was leaving, the other said, "he is not a real Conservative anyway," and she responded, "nobody is real conservative," and that's how it ended.

Somebody heard all of it and told HR... lol... so I had to talk to HR about it...

I have a general rule to not talk about politics at work, but outside of work, that's another story. Has anybody else ever seen this happen at work?

I never talk politics at work, and lie by saying I am apolitical when a discussion does come up. I'm also a dual citizen. So, sometimes, I say I don't vote because I am German. That one always shuts people up.

I’m currently in Israel. There is a lot of politics discussed at work. Mostly people asking me about Trump and racism. And me pointing out to them how stupid the media is in representing them versus the Palestinians. I’ve actually persuaded a lot of Israeli’s with that point alone.
