I'm approaching 50, but I won't say from which side.

You can only "approach" 50 from one direction! The other direction is in the rear view mirror! Unless you refer to your second 50!

Oh, details details.

Hey again folks,

I am too new here, enjoying time so far. Noticed that users are predominantly Americans (hence the threads on American politics getting the most attention) and many, if not most, of them are 50+ people. (Forum itself only provides statistics on gender and ideology iirc)

Not meant to offend anybody regarding age, great to be able read things coming from experience and wisdom. But I was just wondering, what do you think? Most users are middle aged as I noticed or you can't really tell?

I'd agree the average poster here is middle aged or older. I think this is simply due to the format. Traditional forums are falling out of vogue, with stuff like Reddit, Tumblr, et al, but some of us still like the more manageable and communal style of forums.

For my part, I'm 28, and I use both forums like this and "newer" formats. And we do have other posters here my age or younger. I started posting here around when I turned 22. One of our mods, who I'd say just about everyone agrees has always been a strong and intelligent debater, started posting in his early teens.

They didn't have the internet when I was in my teens. So there :p

My mind tells me one thing but then my body chimes in and says you

Experience and wisdom are a trade off for open minded and inventive. The hardest thing for me is watching young people make the same mistakes I made. But I also remember being young and looking at my grandparents and saying how I would never get so hard headed and stuck in my ways. I have a yellow sticky note on my computer the only one and it says stop being hard headed and stuck in your ways. Worthless piece of paper.

If you are young go out an get things done before you are to old and stuck in your ways to get it done.

DP members vary quite a lot in range; we've had members as young as 14-15.

But more are 35 and up. Pretty sure it is partly because older people pay more attention to politics than most younger people... on average.

Goes along with the fact that while a lot of 18-24yo's talk about politics, relatively few of them actually vote.

I almost remember when I was 19.

I almost do too. Then again, I've been married longer than TheGoverness has been alive.

I turned 25 this year but I identify with the 18-24 group so I chose that :2razz:

Yeah absolutely - we do exist! Honestly I just pretty much assume people here are middle ageduntil proven otherwise - I've sometimes been surprised to find out someone here is in their 20's when I simply assumed they were a grumpy old man.

Judging from some of the debates on this site, I would say most are around 6 years old..

Will be 51 in about a week and a half.
