Since the two hurricanes, I haven't seen any threads about people doing stuff for people. I don't know...I'm not a regular consumer of cable or network news so maybe THEY have stories.

But I follow a blog written by a guy named Sundance. He lives in SW Central Florida...an area that got hit hard by Irma. Since Irma moved on, his life has been a daily struggle to recover and, more importantly, help people in his area recover. Some of them just don't have the ability or the resources to do it on their own, but with just plain people working together...they can make life a little better for all of them.

So...Sundance posts a, mostly, daily update on what's going on to his blog and I want to share today's story:

♦ A Poke in The Ribs – yesterday, as we were exiting a convenience store, AJ poked me in the ribs and nodded toward a guy at the gas pump leaning on the edge of his truck bed in a praying position. The truck was towing a trailer with the traditional gear of a pool service, yellow chlorine containers, skimmer poles and vacuum hoses etc.

No words needed between us, we’ve seen that stance a hundred times. “Hey, brother, you ok?” “How ya making out?” In the seconds between the next word, you know… you just know… it’s something about the eyes.

Pool-man Mike lives in an inland area, south Lehigh Acres, and services customers in Bonita Springs. We never thought about pool-man stress til that moment. Family ok, but house is wrecked, no power, and can’t quit working because he can’t lose his accounts. Many of his customers are without power, and he’s trying to keep their pools from turning into fancy concrete ponds. Many are a mess with debris. Strong work ethic.

“No power?” … “You got a generator?”… “etc.”?

Nope, and pool-man Mike has no time to focus on his own needs because he’s got to keep the business afloat. Kids at home, school is cancelled next week too; momma stressed and also working. They need to work, everyone does.

OK, Here’s The Plan: Take our generator and 20 gals of fuel; give us a list of your next days account work (six stops); we’ll take your trailer and do the pool work for a day; that’ll buy you 36 hours to set up generator, get house in order etc. and we’ll drop off trailer at end of day.

Phone number exchange, handshakes turn to hugs on exit. All Good.

So...just keep in mind that, while you are all upset at a court ruling...a riot...Trump...the Mainstream Media, there are people out there who are worrying about getting out from under Mother Nature's slap upside the head...how to make ends meet...how to feed their families. And just keep in mind that there are people out there who'll give the shirt off their back or a day of hard labor to help their neighbors.

Thank you, Sundance, for reminding me that we all can need something and we all can help someone in need.

If legit, that's a great story.

But the personal takeaway from this northern boy? If I ever move south to a hurricane area, I'm getting a quality built-in generator and some serious fuel storage! ;)

Sundance is legit. Read his previous updates.

btw, here is an email he received from FEMA. I guess THEY are reading his blog, too.

FYI… following your reports. We are supplying millions of gallons of fuel. I have used your posts to provide leadership insights into life in much of the state. Prayers are with you.

But yeah...the Six P's (Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance) is always a good thing to keep in mind. Unfortunately, many people just don't have the means or resources to prepare. That's where the Power of People comes in handy.

It's rather funny you want to take this tone now, that Trump is in charge since you brought him up and especially that whole line about people being upset about other things, because I happen to remember when there was a natural disaster in your back yard, instead of being awe inspired by communities and individuals coming together, and the heroism of firefighters who work like hell to battle these inferno's... You took the opportunity to bash Obama instead.

Let's take a trip down memory lane shall we?

Great. On top of everything going on here, now we have to deal with Obama. Heck, he'll probably stiff the city on the cost of security...like he has in many other places.

Obama...do Colorado Springs a favor: Stay away.

Hah!

That's a great letter from FEMA, too. I also like the way the author added, "Prayers are with you". You rarely see that in official fed correspondence.

Lots of good stuff, here. I just wish we did this as a country all the time. It seems we never come together except in catastrophe, so I guess that's just human nature of sorts.

That's because I was out there helping my neighbors and didn't want the distraction...and the costs.

When one guy was President, you used a natural disaster to attack him, Trump has made multiple trips to these sites, of which you've had nothing negative to say, and you want to start your post off by saying "Yah know, there are people suffering out there, and people pulling together and helping each other" and that's great but then attacking people for being upset about other things (things which you support) while this is going on.

But when the shoe was on the other foot, you attacked, all out Obama for daring to visit the site of a natural disaster.

Well, there you go. We sure know what YOU care about, don't we. The people in those disaster areas? Nah. A chance to attack a forum member? Sure...let's do it.

In any case, I didn't attack anyone for anything...and, tell me, what makes you think I support riots? Dude...you are working real hard at constructing some useless outrage, aren't you?

You know...maybe I hit a nerve with my thread. Maybe you DON'T give a rat's ass about the people in the disaster areas. Maybe you are just pissed and feel like I'm rubbing your nose in your own character traits. Close to the mark? Hmmm???

Yeah...and it's just human nature, I guess, that even in catastrophe some refuse to come together.
