Getting a new dog.

Yes, we are. My evil Trump-supporting neighbor is a member of the ASPCA and does a lot of volunteering in animal shelters. She's going to give my dad some recommendations.

One of my friends used to volunteer at the local ASPCA to do dog walking.. which he did every day. Then, he got offered a job there being the adoption manager, and he got out of the corporate world to do what he liked to do anyway.

One of the things he and his wife have been doing the last bunch of years is adopting older dogs. They inevitable pass away quicker, but they get the last few years in a loving home... and it's better than having to put them down.

Also forgot to mention that if you get an Akita, your yard is going to look like the lunar landscape because Akitas are diggers that cannot be trained to stop, at least not in my experience. When our Akita died, we buried him in a hole that he, himself dug. Seemed kind of fitting.

Female wolves are like that when they are in heat too.

So a few months ago, my dog Bart died of cancer. Ever since then, Bandit, our last surviving dog, has been depressed. I guess being "King of the House" is meaningless when you have no subjects to rule. It was pretty bad when his brother Chico (our other chihuahua) passed away. But he still had Bart. Now with Bart gone, he has no one.

So my dad called me and told me he wanted to get a new dog. Although my mom isn't too hot on the idea, I think she's still depressed after Bart's death, since he was her mom's dog (we took him in after she passed away).

We are probably gonna get a Yorkie; something similar to Bart. Although Bart can never be replaced. Hopefully my mom will eventually warm up to the idea.

Oh yes...your mom will grow to love the new dog so don't worry...my dog of 16 years, Brownie, died last September...my heart was broken...I cried day and night for 2 weeks...until my DD brought home Hazel one day from the SPCA...a puppy 5 months old...long story short...she's laying here beside me...though she will never replace my dear, sweet Brownie...she's reserved a special place in my heart...

Yorkshires are nice dogs. My preference might go towards short haired chihuahuas though.

Greetings, JoG. :2wave:

We lived in a large city when I was a youngster, but then my parents moved to the "country" - they bought five acres in a nearby small town - - and everyone remarked about us "moving way out there,," but we always had large dogs for protection - border collies, shepherds, etc.

Time passed, and that country living has turned back into city living again and we don't have sidewalks yet, but I now have great neighbors and a large garden and fruit trees! I bought the large house I grew up in when my parents decided to downsize, and I still live here. *lots of memories...*

I have a Chihuahua now who thinks he's a lion, plus I babysit my daughter's three dogs on occasion when she travels - a Yorkie, a Maltese, and a large Australian Shepherd. The Maltese is the only female in the bunch, so there has been a contest going on between the Chihuahua, the shepherd and the Yorkshire to determine who is "top dog," but the chihuahua is feisty, he was here first and this is his house, by Gawd, and he isn't backing down for anyone! Period! :lamo

Life sure keeps us entertained, doesn't it?

Yeah. Death is difficult to deal with.

But as my girlfriend always tells me, you have to die a little inside in order to live.

When you pass 50 and your parents are up around 70-plus, you start to realize that death is going to play a large part in your life real damned soon.

At least my wife and both my dogs are still young. :)

Hello, Polgara. What's your preference for pets? Cats or dogs?

I have both, but the dogs have the edge. The Chihuahua is the smallest animal I have currently - even the cats weigh more than he does!

I have often said that there must be an invisible flashing sign that tells stray cats they are welcome, because it's been a regular thing to have them show up, probably because I live outside the city. I used to take them to a dairy farmer friend of mine who lives 20 miles from here who gladly took them to keep the mice population in his barn in check, and in return they got all the milk they want, but I only have two now, and they've both been here for years, getting fatter and lazier!

Stray cats have the same habit with my mom, much as she hates it; she just can't help but feed them when they show up, and of course they stay after that! I like cats as much as the next person, but I definitely prefer dogs. I've always found that they embody the best traits of humanity: loyalty, trust, and... the third one. I like ehere I was going with that, but I can't think of a third trait that isn't a variation of the other two. Crap.

We've got a chihuahua too, she must weigh all of 3 pounds and she's afraid of most of the cats, although she doesn't need to be. They all outweigh her several times over!

Luckily, we've stopped feeding stray cats. We wound up with the last one or two that came around, but we're trending down on cats now, down from 6 to 4, since our two oldest died over the past couple of weeks. One more to go and we'll be down to our target of 3 cats and it's never going above that again. Yeah, I say that, it never works out that way, but I'm holding firm... at least until another kitten shows up. :)

I hear you! I've said the same thing, but I can't not feed anything that's hungry! My favorite was a calico - beautiful little thing - but I soon learned that she was nearly blind. I took her to the vet, and he told me that it's a problem with calico cats. Well, there was no way I could not give her a home, so I kept her for years, and just watched when she misjudged distance when she tried to jump from the couch to someplace else, and caught her in mid-jump if I could so she wouldn't injure herself. We both learned something new when she came to live with me, and I still miss her...

I have a stray that is coming to get fed every day.. my cat trying to play with her, and she basically ignores him when he does that. The neighbors young cat (less than a year old) comes too, not to get fed, but to play with my cat. I find it watching my cat chase it around the yard over and over again, and then getting chased by it with much amusement.

My mother was telling me that they used to have a cat that kept chasing this rabbit around the house (outside). When the rabbit would get tired, it would stop, stamp it's foot, and then they both would take a rest.

I have a 5# Chihuahua that loves to play with my neighbor's huge Shepherd, and they wear each other out! My neighbor said she would pay Louie, my Chihuahua, because of the exercise her dog gets, since it saves her the time she would otherwise spend taking her dog for a walk! :lamo

That is exactly what I think of the young cat coming to play!

When I was down in Texas, the cat wasn't allowed out , since we were in a development, and I didn't the traffic, and the occasional aggressive dog. Now, he was so demanding, I let him out, but kept a very close eye on him initially (well, still do).

THe best thing about letting him out is not only does he get enough exercise, but I don't have to change the litter box ..
