Is it time to prep?

It's always been time to prep, but there's nothing special about the current time/mix of events.

Having experienced WW2, my mom drummed that into my head. She's always had some things stockpiled.

No.

Or, to be precise, nothing more than what you should normally have.

Therefore, we shouldn't have a month's worth of stockpile? Just the usual weekly groceries?

The problem with water is that it's heavy and especially so in the quantities you need for a week or more.

Bottled water is easy to transport and should be kept on hand for immediate, short term needs. Larger containers are great for shelter in place scenarios (such as a hurricane) but are difficult to move if you have to bug out. Bottom line is that you need a solid plan for purifying water. There are a few straw type filters on the market that are good, lightweight options if you're on the move but throwing a few bucks at a good Berkey system will get you more clean water in a more usable fashion. It's a good option for people with kids or elderly.

Lifestraw and aquatabs are the answers. Should you have to move - it's easy to take along with you. You don't need to haul a lot of bottled water. Apparently, it's being used for humanitarian aid in Africa.

I found this article from a prepper site.....and it's scary. It's supposed to be a story of a survivor in Bosnia.

For one year, I lived and survived in a city with 6,000 people without water, electricity, gasoline, medical help, civil defense, distribution service, any kind of traditional service or centralized rule.

Our city was blockaded by the army; and for one year, life in the city turned into total crap. We had no army, no police. We only had armed groups; those armed protected their homes and families.

I'm loading up on rolled oats. It can be eaten even without cooking - just soak overnight. It's high in protein and fiber. It can be stored long-term. It gives you a break from canned foods.

LifeStraw - We make contaminated water safe to drink.

Products like the Lifestraw are good if you're on the move but they don't work well for the elderly or infants. It's a good product if you're on the move but once you set up, even temporarily, you will want a more robust solution to your water needs.

With all these things going on from violent protests, natural disasters (stories from St Maarten huricane aftermath -not sure if it's fake news), to North Korea....is it time to prep?

I've got the usual standard 2-weeks supply recommended by Red Cross, but I added aquatabs and strawlife.
Is anyone prepping?

I don’t call normal reediness prepping, the average family should have a three day survival kit ready and waiting. If they live in areas that get storms with utilities down past that three day window they should be ready for 120 hour/ 5 day or not be there in the first place, evacuate.

I excel in this area, and have become an expert on urban and rural survival when it comes to this topic with extensive real world life long practice.

Here is a rig all can build for powering usb lights and electronics. The base is a deep cycle marine battery. The case has options of USB,12V cigarette, the fancy case in not necessary. Add on a Pure Sine Wave inverter and you have a power plant to last those three days plus. All this can be purchase at Walmart in advance for less than $150 for the base unit and inverter. ( urban survival for todays tech)

While at Walmart purchase the freeze dried food 72 hour bucket for a family of four.

Is there ever a time not to prep???? Prepping is always good, be the person with food and water and fuel , instead of hoping local stores have what you need after everyone who did not prep ran in and fought eachother over what little remained. Just for the love of god do not be the prepper with little food or water and 10,000 rounds of ammo, See it so much on the internet and it is sad, because those people seem like they are prepping for a zombie apocalypse or something.

For food canned food works good, just rotate the stock and make sure 2 weeks worth atleast stays in stock at all times. For water you can get sterilized storage containers usually 5-10 gallon, aqua tabs work as do strait iodine tabs, the lifestraw works good as well, but in all prepperness a heat source to boil water works the best, as boiling water kills more microbes bacteria parasites etc than anything else.

In prepping I like to have set aside atleast one firearm and some ammo, in times of natural disaster people get stupid, like for example people getting murdered over a generator or having food, or just getting hit by looters. In all reality I limit this to one firearm I can carry as well as an ammunition that can be carried effectively, after all If I have to flee from some surprise disaster on foot because of flooding or whatever, I am not dragging my whole gun supply and ammo with me, I would rather hide them somewhere or lock them in the safe and walk away with my life.

My dad bought a canned chicken a while back. Like, an entire chicken in a can, bones and everything. I pray that times do not get that lean before I'm out of the house again.

Had someone talk about a canned whole chicken at work, never myself eaten it, heard they were popular in some very remote regions where shipping in fresh chicken was a challenge and raising chickens was not viable.

Then you must have lived through meat free mondays, meat shortages, and the god aweful exemption spam, which for some reason then did not count as meat during meat rationing.

A few drops of non-perfume bleach to certain amount of water is one way (the ratio depends on what site you read). Then there's aquatab?

I got about a dozen 24-packs of bottled water (got them on sale) - but they get rotated since we use them regularly. I plan to add more enough for 4 people to last at least 2 months.

I was disappointed to learn though, that plastic water bottles spring leaks after a period of time. I I lived in Bum****, Egypt, though, I probably wouldn't do much except water, extra canned goods and ammunition.

What can it hurt?

Don't stack them too high - 5 should be enough. Check their best-before date, and organize them that they get rotated.

I've got water dated 2019 - give or take, they should last at least 3 years longer than that date.

Yes, you don't want to go out there when people are going nuts looting....that's why it's good to be prepped so you can ride it out without having to go out. You just worry about the security of your place.

It was my mom who lived through that. Yes, she stocked on spam, and pork and beans. And rice and dry beans. I'll do the same.

With dry beans, I'll be stocking mostly mung beans - they take only 15 minutes to cook (without soaking overnight - what more when you soak them overnight), and yet they have basically the same amount of protein like the other beans.

Nissin Cup-O-noodles, is cheap at the dollar store - and it's made in the USA!
Yes, I'm mindful of where the food is made.

Oh boy, hygiene will be a big problem if the bad situation takes long. We'll need water not only for drinking, but cooking and hygiene purposes.

I have to think of our pets, too.

I prefer my adventure look a bit more appetizing than this.

That is not always an option, which is why bugout bags or 3 day bags exists, sometimes an emergency means you have to leave, and can only take what you can carry in short notice.
