Two ladies just stopped at my door to drop off The Watch Tower. Just stayed a minute. I thanked them and God-Blessed them. Most people I talk to despise their door-to-door prostelatizing. You?

Why or why not?

They come by here every now and then. Sometimes I invite them in during the summer if they look hot and tired and give them some iced tea, and if I have the time. They don't really bother me. If I don't have the time, I tell them that and they are polite, hand me a copy of The Watch Tower and leave.

It depends. I politely tell them to leave. If they don't then we have a problem and I turn the hose on them.

I do that occasionally as well.

An anecdote. My bestie Nancy's husband greeted them this particular Sunday with a tirade. "GET OFF MY PROPERTY! I HATE WHAT YOU PEOPLE DO. IF YOU COME BACK, I'LL CALL THE COPS! JERKS!!" and slammed the door.

Nancy, who'd been standing nearby in the house, opened the door and said, "You'll have to excuse my husband. We're getting ready to go to church."

I don’t like anyone coming to my door unsolicited to try to sell me something. It doesn’t really matter whether it’s a cable TV deal, a new roof or a god.

Why not is if I want/need something then I will go get it or order it to be delvered. I don't want some morons getting my dogs all excited to "sell" me their (intursive?) religion or latest "as not seen on TV" widget under some direct marketing pyramid scheme.

Rather than kill trees and burn fossil fuel to "spread the word" these zealots should advertise using mass (non-print) media and/or offer goods/services to support their cause like almost everyone else does.

While many are "going green" these folks should try to build their flock (to be fleeced?) by using a more environmentally friendly and less intrusive means.

I'm a life-long atheist and I like to read Watchtower, sometimes I talk with them. Drawing from various parts of the Bible to illustrate a theme is interesting.

I live in a neighborhood where soliciting is not allowed. And Im glad because anything other than boyscouts or girls scouts or a kid selling chocolate for school shouldn't be knocking on peoples doors to bother them about nonsense. I've had one person knock to request donations for their church, and I was polite when saying no, but people shouldn't do that. There are plenty of street corners where you can reach many more people than by knocking on doors. I couldn't imagine in a million years knocking on peoples doors to tell them "Hey, I think you are wrong on religion and I'd like to share mine with you."

Because people generally don't like religion shoved in their face.

don't have a problem with them
they are Christians practicing their faith and attempting to spread it as they have been instructed to do
my technique is to meet them on the front porch and explain to them that i am not a Christian
but that i appreciate their offer to share the word
they immediately leave with their dignity intact - mine, too

during some labor-management contract negotiations i learned that management's chief negotiator was a JW member
that then told me that she would not lie - unlike many other management representatives
possibly the best contract i ever negotiated
when i asked a pointed question she could not answer in the affirmative, and would not answer, saying that she could not answer it, i knew exactly where management stood on the matters under discussion
she would not lie
wish there were more like her

Meh, I've mellowed a lot about such things over the years. I used to get slightly annoyed and tended to cut them off and say I'm not interested. I'm still not interested but I will invite them in to chat if they want, however my very enthusiastic and friendly dog makes them uncomfortable and they more often than not leave. :(

I did try to engage a couple of female Mormon missionaries (yes they have those now) but they wouldn't engage in anything specific related to their religion but only gave me a website to watch a video about easter or something like that. They were nice polite young women though.

I take their Watchtower, thank them politely, and sometimes discuss a Bible verse or two. They're harmless. They probably think I'm a hot prospect, as I don't shut the door in their faces.

I think my gardener is a JW. He's a hard worker and does a good job, and never tries to convert me to his faith.

My barber is as well, but he's always telling implausible stories about how all the women lust after him. I'm not sure he's all that faithful, but then, I don't know that much about their theology. Maybe womanizing is OK.

Being I don't get a physical newspaper anymore, I've discovered Watchtowers are a suitable substitute when starting a campfire in my backyard. :2razz:

I avoid answering the door when Jehovah's Witnesses come around. Thankfully I won't have to deal with door-to-door salesman for a while.

My wife got one the of JWs to give her her personal Bible. My wife's pretty well versed in the Bible and when she started talking with them and couldn't seem to match what they were saying with what was in in her Bible, she told them, "I can't find that in my Bible, so I can have yours so I can see if what you are saying is correct?" The lady at the door told her that that was her personal Bible and my wife responded with "Are you denying me a Bible?" The lady pulled out a few personal notes and items from her Bible and handed it to her. It was YEARS before they darkened our door again. The sad thing about the lady's Bible is that it was pretty much unread (you tell by the wear and discoloration on the corners of the pages and the condition of the spine). I've read through some of it and found it to be mostly correct, but with a handful of glaring discrepancies - most having to do with the person of Christ.

That's a good use for it, also for those advertising fliers that keep showing up in the mailbox.

How do you know the version you rely on is the correct one?

Door to door salesmen are pretty much extinct. If someone comes to your door trying to sell you carpet cleaning, house-painting, etc. they are most likely "gypsies" (not the real thing, but groups of people traveling together for the purpose of criminal activity). The usual scam is to tell you that they'll clean/paint one room for free and then ask to take a look at the room, so that they know the size of it and can schedule the cleaning/painting better. What they are really doing is checking out your home to see if there's anything worth stealing.

Comparisons to earliest existing texts. You know the ones that are a 100 years or so separated from the originals, unlike most historical documents which are several centuries separated from the originals. Yes, I'm well aware of the usual "How do you know your version is the right one?" garbage and had you made the effort to truly study this issue, you would know that the Bible is without a doubt the closest document to it's originals that has ever existed by literally orders of magnitude.

I'll speak to them occasionally if I have the time. I like to discuss religion and they are always really nice people. It's good to question our beliefs once in awhile.

The original manuscripts don't exist anymore. You're basing your certainty on translations (of translations) that you have no idea whether they are accurate or not, let alone the editorializing that went into which books became part of the "bible" and those that didn't make the cut. I have no doubt that you have faith they are accurate though.
