This isn't meant to be a funny thread, but a serious discussion about speech.

Recently, a very popular beauty youtuber was heard saying the N word while drunk. She has been apologizing profusely since then. My question lies in part of her apology:

She says she "never ever" speaks like that. But in the video, it rolled off her tongue like it was perfectly normal for her.

So - my question - when you're drunk, is it likely that racist terms will roll off of your tongue even if you never, ever speak like that? I wonder if hearing that word over and over again (in music, maybe?), but never saying it can cause it to come out of you when you're drunk? Just curious what you all think.

Without knowing in what context it was used, it's difficult to know. But I'm inclined to think she's heard it before, dontchaknow. And has undoubtedly said it a time or two. BFD.

To my experience, and I deal with a lot of drunks, alcohol brings out the true person in most cases.

Without knowing the context of the YouTuber it's hard to say about her situation but as for a person I could see how that would be possible. If someone who is white hangs around with a group of black people often who say nigga.

It was hard for me to hear exactly in the video. She was playing a video game and said something about "n***as" - I guess calling people in the video game that word? I don't know. My question isn't so much should she be crucified for it, but is it possible for that to come out of your mouth if you "never ever" speak like that.

Well, from my own subjective experience, it would never come out of mine. So I'd suspect she's a little too familiar with the word.

I don't believe she never says the word. Doesn't necessarily mean she is racist, but she definitely says it. Curse words don't accidentally slip out unless there are other situations in which you use them comfortably.

I say lots 4 letter words when I am alone or with friends. Sometimes I slip up and accidently say one of those words around my kids or, even more rare, around my mom.

However, I never accidently say racial slurs because there is never a situation in which I am comfortable throwing those words around. So it is never on the tip of my tongue. There is no habit. No muscle memory that kicks in without me thinking as sometimes happens with non-racial swear words.

My father used to have a black border collie that he named 'N-word.'

At that point in time, we lived way back in the sticks in East Texas. 1.5 miles off the blacktop, 7 miles from the nearest intersection.

The closet neighbor was well over a mile away. Even still, when he would stand on the back porch stoop, calling the dog home to eat, I would cringe when he would shout to the top of his lungs, "Here N*****, N*****!"

The word is common in conversation in certain circles.

But "good folks" never say it. Naw, never.

Did she use it in a racist context or with racial connotations? No apology needed in my opinion.

Don't let racists with victim mentalities ruin your life or play you like a game.

IMHO if folks in this day & age still utilize the 'N' word in conversation, for social media, or for pretty much any purpose, that is just unacceptable

just sayin' ..............

I will not lie, growing up we had these giant ravens that occupies everywhere, close to the size of gold eagles. My faminly had two famous uses of the word, one was calling all ravens n*gger chickens because how big they got there, and of course their color.

The other came from my great grandfathers siblings, his father was white, his mother was cherokee, all the kids came out white except one which looked black, but he looked identical to his father other than the ultra dark skin. The mother was light skinned cherokee and he got the recessive genes where he looked ultra dark. The family saying became there is a n*gger in the woodpile.

Mind you my family originated from missouri and west virginia in the last century, and it was a constant saying with the older generation.

Nooo, definitely not. I can't imagine being drunk would be enough for me to say something like that. I'm still me when I'm drunk -- I'm just louder and more annoying. And I just don't say crap like that. As Bob mentioned, there's no muscle memory for it. And I think that's true for most people. Being drunk doesn't change your morals, it just brings out your true self in most cases...

That said, there are a minority of people who are nice while sober, and real assholes while drunk. However, if they know they can turn like that... why do they keep drinking?

On rare occasion, I actually do have a day completely out of the blue where I get halfway into a drink and suddenly start to feel pretty down. I have no clue why it happens, it's not related to what my mood started out as, it's just random. And I know if I keep drinking, I'm going to get depressed and cranky. So I cut myself off and go home before I ruin my own day.

I don't understand why people who know they're dicks when they're drunk don't just exercise more discretion, and not get quite so drunk.

The drunk mouth speaks what the sober mind thinks.

I usually do not hold drunken comment against people. There truly is no functioning internal editor under those conditions. So, drunk people say all sorts of crazy crap.

Don't get drunk. Problem solved.

Nigger is the most diluted word in America.

Try unretiring and use it often to see what it does for your career, friendships, ... .

No, being drunk changes who you are, it doesn't reveal the true you. Good gods, I can't believe someone wrote that!

We are all governed by instincts and emotions to a degree. But most of us, as we mature, use our higher brain functionality, our ability to REASON, to literally direct, filter, etc., our behaviors. That's who we are, when we can choose our behaviors, when fully mentally and physically able. Take away your ability to reason via alcohol, and you've mentally altered yourself.

If you drink and do something stupid, you are held accountable as an adult. She broke no law, so who cares IMO. Also, there are a lot of people that want to use the N word because they hear it often from black entertainers, comedians, actors, etc., and they use it like "brother, dude, etc." We pick that up subconsciously that's how social/language functions. She may use her reasoning to NOT choose to express that, but when drunk, it may just come right out. So even if it is her natural desire to use the N word from her more...primitive brain function, that doesn't' even indicate she's racist deep down.

Yep. The concept that being drunk "reveals who we really are" is an ignorant myth. Your explanation as to why it is a myth was excellent.
