To Everyone in Florida

Thanks man, not my first rodeo but I appriciate your advice. The only thing I will tell you is when the wind speed is 150mph it is a big threat. It can pick up and hurl cars around and rip apart homes. Dont underestimate the destructive potential high speed winds have.

If you know that, why didn't you leave?

My dear, it IS photoshopped. Hurricane Andrew Struck in 1992. That hurricane was concentrated in south Florida and did $26 billion in '92 dollars then. It was a Category 5 when it hit land. The comparison in size is frightening.

sorry, it looks like a photo shop.

the comparison is misleading.

Since I saw THIS, I hope all in its path are driving north. Every.single.one.

my sister lives in west palm. she has lived there since the late 70's. she has a plan.

checked in with her yesterday evening. will call again tomorrow.

storm track has shifted to the gulf side of florida.

be safe!

the comparison is misleading.

How do you know that? Link?

where did you get the photo. you did acknowledged it was photo shopped.

at what stage of hurricane Andrew was that photo taken?

photo shop is a great way to manipulate perception.

MaggieD never manipulates perception ...

I got it off Facebook. But wait...

Powerful Hurricane Irma is forecast to go down as one of the strongest storms to hit Florida in recent memory, which brings about comparisons to other storms.

For many in the Miami area and much of South Florida, that benchmark storm is Hurricane Andrew.

“Irma is about twice as big as Andrew,” AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said.

And this is the photo on the Fox News site...

Give them a call if you want to know what stage it was when seen by satellite. (I think I'm going to like having your inquiring mind around. Welcome.)

If you know that, why didn't you leave?
For a number of reasons and in no particular order,

1. Up until the past 2hrs the general consensus was irma was going to turn way east of me.
2. Run to where. There are many people regretting leaving miami for the west coast.
3. Getting out of a hurricanes path is a guessing game, instead I choose to stand my ground and prepare for the possibility of an impact and hope for the best.
4. This is my home and it needs my protection.

That photo was used on The Weather Channel to show the size difference between the two Category 5 hurricanes, at Category 5 strength. It was then used by CNN and two other Cable News Channels. Of course it was photoshopped, since both hurricanes did not occur simultaneously; the National Weather Service has access to satellite photos of both storms.

This was all carefully explained by meteorologists on all those weather/news stations. So I suggest you take your beef up with the National Weather Service, not Maggie.

Im riding this thing out. I live in Sarasota which is the south west coast. I thought I was OK till it shifted west on me. Now its too late to leave and Im not too proud to admit that I am worried. Depending what happens in the next 24hrs I may be abandoning the house and going to a shelter to ride this one out. Right now it will reach me as a cat 2 which I will be safe where I am at but if it shifts anymore to the west and Im looking at either a 3 or a 4 hitting me. Your not safe in a house at those windspeeds.

Thanks to all sending well wishes.

It is the flooding that kills. Get to high ground if you can. Don't wait until the water traps you.

You cannot stop the wind or the water from destroying your home if that is going to happen. The only one you can save is yourself.

Well. I evacuated my area to avoid inconvenience. But the damn thing keeps moving west. We are probably going to ride it out here unless it moves further west.

Considering everything, I am happy you made that choice. That storm scares the heck out of me.. and make me concerned for the people I know down there.
