Yesterday, I called a drug manufacturer to report a flaw I recognized in an inhaler. I learned it WASN'T a flaw, and there was a specific reason for the way the product dispensed. Healthwise it was a great call. That's besides the point, though.

Example #1 -- I mentioned how expensive the product was, and the service representative suggested I talk to a special department that could help. They asked me my yearly income which is low because of interest rates. I qualified for their program, and now I will get that medication mailed to me monthly at no charge. It costs $450 a month. I have plenty of assets. They didn't care about that. Didn't ask.

Example #2 - A family friend shows little income on his return. He was enrolled into Medicare's Advantage program and gets all of his meds for an $8.00 co-pay. There is no monthly premium for this. He has over $2 million in the bank. He's 88 years old.

What are your thoughts?

Yes there ought to be a means test before qualifying for subsidized programs. Granted in many cases this punishes the ants while the grasshoppers get a free ride which also irritates me.

The requirement is income based.

The question is, "should assets count?"

Why would be my response.

If one has paid into Medicare as required under the current system, then "no" to assets counting.

Then why even differentiate between Medicare users based upon current income?

Maggie, Didn't the pharma require some evidence of your income? Seems too simple to only have to say what your income is and not furnish some documentation.

Oh, yes. I'm filling out the online form. I gave them my income numbers right off my 1040, and they will require I submit a copy of it with the paperwork.

If we trust our Medical Professionals to never do harm ... then can we assume when someone needs medicine healthy living we honor that ... and if they have the means ... they should cover that, if not ...
