Is anyone else excited about the eclipse? Someone gave me this link which will show you how it's going to look from your zip code area. Pretty neat!

It's really interesting to me how civilization long ago reacted to events like this. It must have been frightening not knowing what was happening.

Anyone getting those "glasses"? I have to look into them, but I probably won't bother.

That simulation wouldn't load on my old XP pc. Found another map. At my location there will be 82% obscurity for about two minutes forty three seconds. Not bad. I'll just make a pinhole camera, and enjoy the eerie glow of the sky. :)

Jealous of you guys for having a front row seat, we'll only get a partial eclipse up here...and I think it's going to be raining, if the weatherman is to be believed... :( Enjoy! :)

I would avoid looking directly at the sun. There's already been reports of less than adequate glasses/filters being sold/distributed.

Try this;

From what I remember of my last encounter was the stillness and quietness of everything as it was bathed in the weird light the eclipse cause. I might try to get out in the country away from traffic and city noise.

After reading Day of the Triffids I have no intention of looking at any celestial event in the sky ever again! :shock:

Exactly. There will be a bunch of idiots that think they can look at it without protection...guaranteed.

I've got both my telescopes prepared for the event,, Will see 77% coverage from my location.. Still debating on whether to call the local radio station and offer to setup in a public location or just setup at home.

Some suggestions to view, Go to hardware store and buy a welding helmet glass,, I carry one in my box of scope supplies.

Get a hole punch a punch a hole in a piece of paper, hold it over another piece of paper and you can see the moon as it crosses the sun.. ( not as exciting, but still effective)

Look for a local astronomy club in your area, contact them to see if they are doing a public display.

DO NOT LOOK THROUGH ANY KIND OF MAGNIFYING DEVICE THAT DOES NOT HAVE A SOLAR FILTER... ( Telescope, binoculars etc...)

Also Sunglasses are NOT dark enough.

otherwise,, enjoy the heck out of the event.

There are many fakes out there right now.. so if you do get those 'glasses', make sure you get one from a reliable source.

Just be careful...

That would suck! I wanted to buy a filter for my telescope, but they run from $60 - $120. Couldn't see spending it just in case it would be cloudy!

Oooh! That looks good. I'm going to read it. (after the eclipse)

3:15 from here to a point where we can see 100%. Traffic will probably make the ride a lot longer. I thinking about it, as I've never seen 100% before.

That's an entire workday, minimum, for a 2 minute event. But if as an experience it's even close to the sunrise over Haleakala, it's worth the trouble.

After I posted I read up on those glasses and got a list of "authorized " vendors. Thanks for the warnings!

I am so geeking out over it :mrgreen:

I picked up a piece of #14 welding glass on Amazon a couple years ago for looking at the sun. I think it was like $5. Works great, and it's big enough to go in front of my binoculars.

That's cool,, Just be extremely careful that the glass does not slip off the bino's,, You'll get the ant in the magnifying glass scenerio.. And that aint' good..

I have a Meade LX90 telescope and a Meade ETX80 telescope, both with solar filters,, will probably set up in the driveway and invite a few neighbor's and kids over to watch..

Be careful all...

Yeah, I'm experimenting with ways of keeping it attached.

13 minutes! So excited! I couldn't find glasses, but I did find welder's lenses shade 14. Although I won't see a total here in NY, I'm excited anyway :)

Oh, I just learned recently that the next one in 2024 will be more in the eastern part of the country.......NY will have 90% eclipse where I am upstate!

Full overcast here :/

Using binoculars if you have some over my safety glasses; tricky but it's 10X magnification; will check the partial right now with safety glasses over binocs ;

Currently at full eclipse in Tucson. This is HIGHLY overrated.

be careful! My lenses are working great! It looks like a bite out of the sun right now, but it's early :)

Well, you're pretty far away from totality so it isn't quite as awesome.
OTOH, these celestial events are kinda awesome on there own, total or not.
To each his own.:)

It's probably more exciting when it's a total eclipse like in Oregon or in the path. In AZ, you'll only see a partial according to the NASA maps.
