Today I watched CNN present a brief piece on a voluntary Drug Program based in Nashville, North Carolina.

God Bless Police Chief Thomas Bashore's leadership and kindness! He has opened the door 24/7 to the town's Police Station to any and all addicts who walk in ready to turn the page to the better.

I Googled the Chief to find a link.

What a great program idea. Thanks for posting this.

I looked him up, and here's a picture of the Chief:

Dude looks like he was born in Whoville.

Looks like he grew up working in cotton and tobacco fields on the weekends and his off duty hours as a cop. A typical eastern NC leather faced, callused hands guy. And, a Who from Whoville.

Man I did tobacco field work for a summer job and holy hell it sucked. I thought I was rich at fourteen years old though getting $20 per day. Was glad to never have to do that again... THEEEENN my mother got serious with a tobacco farmer and when I'd go visit, I was put to work baling goddamn tobacco.

IMHO, the only thing worse than hand bailing tobacco, is hand picking cotton. I've done both. Did your fingers turn black, go numb, and smell for days or weeks after?

Lost all the clothes I had worn doing it due to them turning black and tarred. I was on a cropper sled behind a tractor and my hand went through a belt and pulley system that crushed my fingers.

At the time I was panning which is where the croppers plucked the leaves put the leaves between these belts and it came up to me who pulled it out of the pan and put it on a table where they were racked. The leaves often got stuck in the belts trying to make a corner so I'd have to reach out and pull on them to get them through but the dew in the morning made them drip a lot and that **** got into your eyes and burned. So as my eyes burned and I squinted, my hand went through the pulley's.

Then of course it was a blast to be cropping a field while a crop duster sprays the field next to you while you get the overspray.
