Gator attack

*UPDATE* I was at the river again today, I was going to dip my feet, some people said "don't do it, a guy just got bit there a half hour ago" They said they warned him, but he would have none of it. A few minutes later, the gator bit him and they said he had a big chunk of meat hanging. They loaded him up and took him to the local hospital.

An hour later, the game warden showed up and started checking it out. I am hoping they are bust trapping it tonight, it is about a 7fter and it is going to really hurt a kid if they don't. It has developed a taste for longpig.

Manhunter. Creepy.

This why I won't swim in anything less than absolutely clear water with a concrete bottom. Too much hungry, scary stuff elsewhere - gators, bull sharks, toxic algae, flesh-eating bacteria, brain-eating amoeba, etc, etc, etc.

Gators... Moccasins... Fire ants... Good grief!... No wonder everyone moves to California... All we have here are the occasional rattler, plus Great Whites if you swim out too far... And, of course, earthquakes... And Charlie Manson... And the Kardashians...

Ok.. Maybe I'll move... A friend from Alabama told me you can eat moccasin meat.

Someone told me that that Kardashians are inedible. Possibly because of what they were full of.

You can eat anything that wont kill you:lol:

Might be good idea not to eat the head, though.

If a venomous snake manages to inject itself, it can die. IIRC, humans can swallow venom with no ill effects. * disclaimer* (please don't try it)

A guy east of where I grew up.... He lived in the okefenokee swamp and he would go to schools and hold snake exhibits to educate kids on snakes. He used to injest mocassin venim to build an immunity he said because he was always handling them. Okefenokee Joe is what he called himself. Lives in a swamp, sings songs and teaches about snakes.

That does work, I don't know if antivenom is still made this way, but at one, they would inject horses with ever increasing amounts of venom until the horse could withstand many times a lethal dose, then the blood plasma IIRC was given to a bite victim.

I have heard of other snake handlers doing that.

Here's where I show my ignorance... What is the diff between moccasins and cottonmouths? I know that they are both pit vipers, like rattlers. But the friend I mentioned said he saw "moccasin meat" in cans. Izzat true? I have seen rattler meat in tuna can-like containers.

Tastes like chicken, no doubt.

Moccasin and cottonmouth are 2 names of the same snake. It's latin name is Akistadon Piscovourus. Translates to something fisheater

Piscovourus is obviously fish eater... I think that Akistadon means "bad ass."

So from my childhood I remember reading that we had four general types of poisonous snakes in the USA... So there are rattlers, cottonmouths/moccasins, coral snakes and copperheads. Only rattlers here in Calif. Where do copperheads hang out?

Copperheads are very closely related to moccasins, the young are almost, completely indentical. IIRC, the copperheads occur over the entire SE except the southern part of FL AFAIK never heard anyone here talk of seeing one.

There are only four types of poisonous snakes in the US. Rattlers, mocassin, copperhead and coral snakes. That being said, there are a few types of Rattlers though like timber and diamondback.

The telltale sign is poisonous snakes here all have triangle heads. Except for the coral. If it doesn't have a triangle head and it's not a coral... It's not poisonous.

Thanks okefenokee Joe!

I believe copperheads handle cooler weather better. They can be found in the Appalachians. Moccasins are swamp critters and loooooong the water.

This is true. I had a friend claiming he had seen copperheads around here, I always said BS. One day I was digging fossils in the river, he came walking down and told me he saw a dead copperhead a 100 yards or so upriver, I had him point the area out and I went to fetch it, come to find out, it was a dead eel !

lol. I told him, "Not only do you not know what a copperhead looks like, but you cant tell the difference between a snake and a fish"

I never let him live it down. :lamo

Well, almost every day, I go to the river to swim, brink beer and sling rocks (my ritual). A kid was bit by a gator on the foot Friday (thankfully, minor)

This kid has a twin brother and I had been down at the river swimming with these kids and other people, for the last week. They were jumping off the bridge (no no).

I saw this gator 2 days before the attack and warned the boys, you cant tell kids nothing.

The attack took place on the other side of the bridge, pictured. I have jumped off this bridge about 10 times, but I don't anymorehttp://www.nbc-2.com/story/35851263/10-year-old-bit-by-alligator-while-vacationing-in-arcadiaView attachment 67219897

Just popping in to tell you your new avatar and signature is awesome, Boss Hog FTW!!

I don't have much to say about the alligator, other than "HELL NO, I would NOT be swimming where there are gators"... But we don't have them up here, so I'm probably overly afraid...just like folks coming up here and wondering how we fend off the expected multitude of bear attacks, when we never think about it...hehe...

The urinating chimp was not without it's charm, but I mean, come on it's Boss Hog, the hog with the big nuts! lol

We have black bears hear, but attacks are rare as hens teeth, plus they are not very numerous and not much bigger than a large dog, but i'm sure they can do some damage. Gators normally are no threat until idiots feed them. The biggest threat around here is low class morons letting bull dogs run loose in the city. In the woods, feral hogs can be aggressive but all I have encountered ran off.
Even sounders #ing 20-30 with young present.

This is what we do with bears up here....lol

Sudbury man punches black bear in face - Sudbury - CBC News

Just kidding, that guy was excessively badass. Most of the time we don't see them, though there's been a 300 pounder roaming around our town being tracked in the local FB group. Mostly you never see them, though...we're still south enough for the bears to be cautious.

Ontario is a good place for cowards - not too many things that can kill you, and I like that just fine...haha :)

And yes, you cannot mess with Boss Hog. You've inspired a Dukes of Hazard binge watch for me, actually, it's been a while...haha...

Copperheads are actually pretty mellow snakes.. they don't bite just for the heck of it. I caught one once when I was a kid and ignorant.I wouldn't try it again. Rattlesnakes are around here, but not very common. No coral snakes at all near here.

Here's a protip for you with regards to coral snakes. They are very similar in design to a scarlett snake so they taught us a poem to alert us to which is poisonous.

Red on black is a friend of Jack.
Red on yellow may kill a fellow.
