$100k a year - as a Garbage Man???

Anyone with a decent driving record and a CDL can make 50K a year. Probably more in the northeast.

Eh....somewhat. 50k for someone that drives and does something else....like a vender, or some such. But just as a driver? The only people up making good dough at that are truck drivers, and that requires school, and it's Union controlled.

If you can't make 50K as a CDL driver then you are working for the wrong company. Unless you are driving dumps or other similar vehicles.

A corporate CEO makes millions even when he loses his company hundreds of millions, and what warrants a thread? OMG! There is a guy who works in a messy and dangerous field who makes 100K!

Perspective.

In YOUR mind, why do you think I started this thread?

What I'm saying is, driving tends to only be about 40% of the job, for a lot of the jobs up here that require a CDL, from what I've seen.

Someone has to write a check to these guys ... ;)

So how much are they making?

I really wanted to be a garbage man when I was growing up just because they would ride on the outside of the vehicle standing on that little platform on the back.

I know right?

Almost as cool as the firemen that did that. (Back in the day)

Where I'm at, the garbage man rarely has to leave the truck, all they do is pick and dump the can.

Yeah I edited my last post to put in "also fireman" when they used to do that.

Yeah, not many areas have those old trucks anymore.

Everything is inefficient. Second law of thermodynamics.

In natural law, perhaps.

In work for pay situations, the task accomplished can be easily measured in a dollars per task equation.

The job accomplished in this case is costing much more than it should.

You never worked in the public services, did you?

No. Enlighten me. However, keep these real numbers in mind:

Federal outlays in 2000 were 1,789.0 Billion. US Population 282.16 Million. Spending per citizen = 6,340.

Federal outlays in 2015 were 3688.3 Billion. Increase of 106%. Us Population 320.9 Million. Increase of 13%. Spending per citizen = 11,493. Increase of 81%.

Median household income in 2000 was 41,446.

Median household income in 2014 was 53,013. Increase of 28%. Sorry, I couldn't find a table for nominal dollars that went through 2105.

Moral of the story? Everything else being equal, the Government will waste money.

Without garbage men, society collapses in a stinking pile of crap. Entrepreneurs? Meh.

Yeah, not many areas have those old trucks anymore.

Nope.
Now, instead of three men working on one truck and making $33 grand, they have one making a hundred, so the salary cost is the same. Then the workman's comp for the guy riding on the back of a truck had to have been pretty high, so that's a net savings.

They're union, hourly, and work overnight (shift diff), and about 55-60 hours per week.

This is evidence of a municipality getting hosed by a contractor, likely joint owned by an elected official.

My housing development in Houston switched from government trash collection to private and it was the best move we ever made. These guys took everything for less money. No crying over the weight or how much you put out. I replaced my wooden deck and piled the old deck out there. The next day when they came buy I asked them if they would take it and they said no problem. They said I didn't even need to cut it up in small manageable pieces and tied the loose boards into small bundles. They took everything I put out there with never a complaint. Unfortunately I am back to government collection here in PA. I really miss the private collection cheaper and they took everything.

Your post is everything that years of experience with your posts has taught me to expect.

No facts and no relation to the topic of the post to which you respond.

I'll give you one thing. You're consistent.

In New York, the tax payers are funding the same job at the rate of about 2.5 times that paid in Indianapolis.

Brilliant management of tax dollars.

I eagerly await your next Tourette response.

"Do you read the terms and conditions? Probably not. No one does. And so, inevitably, 22,000 people have now found themselves legally bound to 1000 hours of community service, including, but not limited to, cleaning toilets at festivals, scraping chewing gum off the streets and “manually relieving sewer blockages”.

The (hopefully) joke clause was inserted in the terms and conditions of Manchester-based wifi company Purple for a period of two weeks, “to illustrate the lack of consumer awareness of what they are signing up to when they access free wifi”. The company operates wifi hotspots for a number of brands, including Legoland, Outback Steakhouse and Pizza Express.

Purple also offered a prize for anyone who actually read the terms and conditions, and flagged up the “community service clause”. Just one person claimed it."

Not everyone is suited to garbology, and very few would view it as a career choice. They earn every penny. (and not a swearword in sight!)

And just like how natural law isn't the only way to measure 'efficiency', dollars per task isn't either.

This is becoming more and more the norm:

These things are so fricking loud though and they rumble through at 5am I hate them.
