Are your dogs scared of neighborhood fireworks?

One of mine handles it better than the other. One of my dogs hides in the basement when the neighborhood starts lighting them off for the 4th. She's a big fraidy cat.

Roxie hated them, would not go for a walk for a week, last year started peeing on herself. We put her down last Friday, it was maybe a month before she had to had to go, we decided it was cruel to make her do another one.

My wife has combat PTSD, and our house is one of those cheapy crap modern jobs and fireworks are legal here in the county...she hates them too.

She is treating herself with a batch of Strawberry daiquiris I made her, a little maple syrup is my trick.

And some brandy.

My dog is about 90 lbs and he still tries to crawl up into a hole that he can barely fit in when they start going off. He really hates them.

Yeah, they've been going off since the sun went down and my dogs are not taking it well. I feel bad for them. And I wonder what they think.. like if they think a warzone is going on outside, or, they just have a visceral reaction to the noise that causes them fear. they've been acting strange since they started going off.

Same here. Rosie also gets the shakes.

I live near a major military base.... Artillery no longer bothers my dogs so pipsqueak fireworks are no problem.

My 120 pound Akita doesn't like them and won't even eat peanut butter to pacify her which is pretty bad. We go through this every year where she gets close to the wife or I and won't budge.

Never did understand the attraction to big bangs and their redundant colors but then again I'm a boring cerebral person. To me once you've seen one you've seen them all.

And you are literally burning money.

Here is what one dog owner did

One doesn't react at all, while the other cringes under the bed

They make my dog slightly nervous, but not the panic reaction that some dogs get.

I'm just glad they don't wake my kids up, my neighborhood sounded like a war zone last night.

Our two (outside) dogs get nervous and seem confused by fireworks yet don't react that way to nearby gunfire. I think it may be the lack of being able to pinpoint the direction/source. It is hard to explain why dogs our react (bark like crazy) to people on horses going by on the road yet don't get the least bit concerned about horses or cattle in the adjacent pastures (wrong side of the fence?). They both "sing" along with emergency vehicle sirens and one barks (initially) when I use the lawn tractor yet seems oblivious to the (much louder) string trimmer. They both bark when a hot air balloon goes by yet crop dusting aircraft or helicopters don't get a reaction at all.

We have two dogs. One is a Terrier mix and the other is fairly pure bred Beagle.

The Beagle is quite venerable. He is a rescue dog that lived on the street for years. He's a little beat up from the years of neglect, but is now in probably the happiest time of his life: Plenty to eat, a household friend in the Terrier and a couple humans that love him.

The Terrier has no problem with any kind of noise or socializing but the Beagle is quite timid. The firecrackers in the neighborhood are very disturbing for him. So is any loud, unfamiliar noise.

It's nice to have them around and it pains me to see them in any kind of distress.

Not really. I've had dogs that really hated them, but the ones I have now don't mind that much. I have a cocker that isn't wild about them and will come around for some reassurance, but none of them are really afraid. Just because fireworks are illegal here hasn't stopped people from launching tons of them all week.

All of my previous dogs were like that. Hated fireworks, scared them to no end, but were ok with nearby gunshots. Maybe it does have to do with being able to pinpoint the source, I don't know.

My current dog couldn't care less about fireworks, will snooze right through it, but... hates thunder. If he could crawl inside our skin for safety and protection from thunder, I bet he would.

Again, most of my dogs don't care about thunder either. My cocker isn't wild about it and if it's loud, will come over to cuddle, but otherwise, it isn't a big deal. I've had dogs that went crazy over loud noises, but luckily, not at the moment.
