As you know, if you are driving a vehicle and slam on the breaks, any loose items in the car, including people, will slide forward due to inertia.

However, if there is a helium balloon floating inside the vehicle when you slam on the breaks the baloon will fly backwards, the opposite of everything else in the car. Likewise, if you make a sharp left turn everything in the car will slide to the right, except the helium ballon, which will fly to the left.

If this seems counter intuitive to you then you are forgetting about one of the other things in your car: air. The air in your car is also subject to inertial forces. So when you slam on your breaks, the air in your car moves forward, and being heavier than helium, it displaces the balloon, forcing it in the opposite direction.

Try it sometime. It works.
