A 28 year old talented and crazy sailboat owning friend of mine sailed his 30' boat from Key West to the Tampa Bay area a few weeks ago. He also owns thousands of dollars of weapons, including a machine gun, rifle and pistol. While sailing, he tends to keep these weapons loaded and within reach.

I introduced him to my 28 year old talented and sane Muslim friend. She just graduated Medical School. She begins her 3 year Residency in a few weeks. She has a windsurf board she uses outside her family's bay front home. Oddly though, she had never gone on a sailboat before this past Memorial Day.

We went for a gentle sail. My sailor friend sipped from a bottle of Scotch, smoked and freely cursed. My Muslim friend does not drink alcohol, smoke or curse. She has read the Koran in both Arabic and English 13 times cover to cover. We had some interesting conversation. Her parents came here from a lawless northern region of Pakistan. She has four younger siblings, all five children born in Florida. Her father, a highly respected Cardiologist, has a booming practice.

My sailor friend and I learned a lot that day about the Muslim faith. What might have turned out as an awkward and discomforting event turned into an interesting, fun and entertaining Memorial Day of boating!

Good for you guys!

My only comment:

After a fire extinguisher, the most important item on a boat is a firearm.

Sounds like my kind of fun. Though Red Label would not be my Scotch of choice. :)

Life raft? Compass? Sail? Map?

You Americans are mad and very nice at the same time.

Lots of requirements and lots to know: proper registration, running lights, life jackets, flotation device, air horn, head y-valve properly secured, navigation right of way rules adhered to, water depth/draft or run aground, how to sail, how to anchor, how to cleat, what knot to tie, etc.

Yeah, yeah.

We know all this stuff is important. I was just trying to show the importance of having a firearm, particularly in certain areas and on the high seas. Guns are too often overlooked by occasional recreational sailors. And the sailor in the OP is legit in taking a firearm on long sails.

Not sat phone and cameras all over the boat that can upload images direct to the cloud so any pirate will be caught very quickly then?

Just loads of guns so that the friendly couple who sailed up to chat with you before blowing your brains out without giving you the time to reach for a gun can take those as well.

You disagree with me? Fine? I disagree with you, too.

But yes, I see the value of having a gun on-board. And like any other tool or method of protection - I see the inherent risk - but make a risk-reward assessment that in this specific incident comes out positive.

But I suppose it's good to know a live sat-feed can supply evidence to assist in tracking a criminal after they commit a crime. But I also believe self-defense should be proactive in thwarting a crime, as well. You may differ.

Let's say there is a chance of being pirated in coastal waters around America.

There is also a chance that the drunken party finds shooting guns fun. What the hell, drinking all day is sort of the point.... ooops...

Yep, but hopefully he is not too drunk on the day he actually needs to use it. :)

A gun?

For pirates or flying shark attacks? Annoying guests?

I'm being flippant but I'm guessing there must be some obvious thing that I, a non-sailor, am overlooking.

Note the description of the boat owner in my OP-

A 28 year old talented and crazy sailboat owning friend of mine sailed his 30' boat from Key West to the Tampa Bay area a few weeks ago. He also owns thousands of dollars of weapons, including a machine gun, rifle and pistol. While sailing, he tends to keep these weapons loaded and within reach.

I'd prefer he didn't have the guns. Guns or no guns, I trust him with my life to safely transport me from one distant port to another.
His best friend, an Electrical Engineer, works for Elon Musk/SpaceX and owns a waterfront home with a deep water slip near Cape Canaveral. I asked my wife if she wanted to crew for him from Tampa Bay to his friend's home. She said "No way! He's changed. He's too crazy now." I laughed. I have had my own issues with psychosis and have needed help breaking what I call "the Cycle of Stupidity".

So basically, your friend was sailing while drinking hard liquor with loaded guns within range.... Doesn't seem like a most prudent thing to do here.

By my measure, I agree with you. How much experience do you have with Key West sailors?

No. Your answer implies no first hand experience or very limited experience with Key West sailors.

I'm teasing, bro.

Buddy of mine owns the tow-boat USA down there. I've been on trips with him. Still, guns, hard liquor and heavy machinery can hurt no matter where you are or are from.

357 mag was mandatory when we went shark fishing. Caught a 6 foot Mako and reeling it in. The Captain had the 357 in one hand and the gaff in the other, asking me whether I wanted to keep it or tag and release. I kept it. 70 lbs of meat on that thing!

To the OP - that's awesome! It's great when you can bridge a gap like that.
