This has been in the news here for two days.

People simply don't realize they are around very dangerous animals like feeding the bears.

What's wrong with people. I saw another video shot at Steveston of people lining the dock feeding a sea lion. Woman had her stroller, baby and all, up against the timber on the edge of the dock and she's crouched down beside it. The sea lion comes up in front of her and she shrinks back, laughing.
This stuff happens a lot in the Vancouver area. Probably because access to wilderness and wildlife is so easy and available that some people think they're living in a petting zoo or something.

This imo, is a glaring example of the breakdown of parenting. Evidently there are no borders to this phenomenon. Stupid parents beget stupid children.

Whether it's bears or sea lions, people don't seem to grasp the concept of "wild animals." They see a deer in Yosemite, and think "Bambi," instead of "Hey, that critter has little sharp hooves and legs strong enough to bound up the side of a mountain." Lots of injuries from "tame" deer as a result.

You just can't fix stupid.

People are naive, not a year goes by without multiple bison gorings around here.

I don't know if stupid is quite the right word, I'd go with ignorant, but stupidity does play a role.

That was beyond stupid. Whatever doubts they had that they should move the girl back should have been dispelled the first time the animal reached for the girl. That is a wild predator.

At least that man acted quickly.

Willfully naive, maybe. There are signs all over that park warning people about that kind of behavior.

People are used to things that look cute being just like their puppy dogs. Thing is, your dog is cute and cuddly because you feed it when it's nice to you. Wild animals don't play that game. They just look for easy meals.

Yeah, I know, no way someone can claim they didn't see or get the warning, they give them to you when entering the park. Then you drive a few miles and see crowds of people stopping and getting close to the bison and the behavior kind of feeds on itself.

It's the same as the signs warning people to stay away from the tops of waterfalls or off of the slick rocks. Somehow, people don't seem to think warning signs apply to them. I think it's a part of natural selection, so maybe in a few hundred thousand more years, the human race will really be intelligent.

Right?

When I saw this on Good Morning America, the guy at the place it happened straight up blamed the parents and on the news they made it like he was the bad one for actually blaming the parents.

Edit: It was from World News not GMA.

lol...at least they didn't blame the sea lion

But it's so cute and cuddly

It is! Just like a cute little bear or Bambi, or a sea lion.

I heard of one brain trust who shut a bear cub in his car. I'll leave it to your imagination what momma bear did to that car.

We lose a half dozen tourists a year mainly through exposure. The fact we have not lost a tourist to a bear attack is a miracle, but stories of people trying to pet them, others who sited a cougar and tried to follow it.

The biggest problem is people who aren't prepared and get lost. Between tourists and aggressive snow boarders and skiers going out of bounds it costs us millions to go looking for them. I have seen people head up The Chief or Black Tusk with sneakers, no water etc.

It's a wonder we don't lose more.

No, stupid is the right word. Throughout the lower mainland there are warning signs from warning about children left alone and coyotes, but also hikers etc. It happens that we have parks with roads into this wilderness...but you could stamp "don't feed the bears" on every tree and they would still do it.

I was a big hiker years ago and I can tell you some of the weirdest ****, the worst being a father who offered food to a huge female black and got his arm taken off.

I saw a cabin that had been accessed by a bear. There wasn't much left, what stunned me was the crack in the fireplace.

Now, that's one of the best pictures of stupid I've seen.

Yeah, we had a bison ranch down the hill from us, and the owner was very clear that the beasts were not "tame", were fast, strong, and able to kill a 200 lb man in 60 seconds or less.

We never tried to pet one on the nose, lol! We were just watching them from the other side of the fence, but the owner still got nervous. Kinda gave us the impression that puny fence wouldn't stand a chance against one of those charging behemoths!

sadly people are idiots when it comes to wild animals, treating them like there are harmless cute cuddly pets, sadly most of them are not and will hurt or even kill the people who get too close or disturb them.
