About 8 months ago, I set out to kill a feral hog with my 44 1858 Remington new model army, muzzleloading revolver.
So I went to the peace river in arcadia Fl where such critters are common. Sitting down for a beer and a smoke in the staging area, I look across the river and see 2 hogs about 200 yards down, I crossed the river(knee deep) and made my way, slowly, towards them.

They had moved behind a slough that airboats make when the water is high. I stooped down to get close and pop my head up. There are 2 hogs about 80 ft away and they have not seen or scented me yet. I shoot at the first one twice (gun has fixed sights, I shot high) Now, after the second shot, they start to move.

Now I have a shot at the second one, I aim at the ground under its belly, fire the 3rd time, still don't know if I hit it. They both start to run up a second ridgeline. Second hog makes it 15 ft and drops with a loud death sqeal. I could not believe I did it!

I wait about 2 minutes to make sure it is down and its pal aint coming back. I called my wife on the phone and said " I got it" she said "what"? I said "you heard me, I got it!"

So I field dressed it and took it home to do the real work of skinning and butchering (shooting it was the easy part)

The 133 grain round lead ball passed thru both lungs and came to stop just under the hide on the far side. It filled 3/4 of a freezer.

I don't hunt often, but when I do, I pray first. And thank the animal in advance, it has not failed me.

That was a good story, Bob. I respect that you are a respectful hunter. :)

I take great pains to be prepared and not half a** it. Act as though as if, until it is.

I go thru a long check list of what is needed, should I succeed. You owe it to the animal to make a clean, humane exit from life, and the means to harvest and use as much as possible.

Speaking of respectful hunters. In new zealand they are introducing a new law.
Give ducks a fighting chance this season - National - NZ Herald News
Hunters are being urged to give ducks a fighting chance of surviving the annual season which starts in four weeks. As a prelude to limiting semi-automatic and pump-action shotgun fire to a maximum of three shots from 2017, shooters are being asked to do it voluntarily in this year's duckshooting season which opens in May and ends on June 28.

What do you think, fair for the ducks or unfair for the hunters.

Depends, as long as reasonable conservations efforts are followed.
Hunting is not about being "fair" It is about harvesting.

Feral hogs have no season or bag limit, it is a public service to cull them. I have racked my brain to see if they benefit the environment, so far all I can come up with, is they root up the ground and there feces is fertilizer.

Are hogs natural to the environment in Florida? If not, then you're probably doing the indigenous flora and fauna a service...as well as putting food on the table. It's a win/win.

No, they are invasive, the spainyards introduced them in the 1500's. They can make large areas look like heavy equipment moved thru, ranchers hate em, some even pay for removal. I have personally seen sounders of about 30 hogs.

We've had a 3 shot limit for waterfowl since the 1930s.

There are so many, been hunting since I was 12. My favorite times were when I took my kids out.

Lot of our trips were head south of town, hunt for an hour, get a couple of deer, go have breakfast, be home by noon. Our favorite breakfast place was a converted one-room school house.

Depends on if you are hunting primarily for food or sport. I'm not a hunter but my dad is. When he hunts for food (deer and turkeys) he gives himself every legal advantage he can. When he hunts for sport (bear) he handicaps himself. For example, he only hunts bear with a bow. In Alaska. He'll spend days in the wilderness hunting and tracking and even once he sees one, usually miles away from a high elevation, it can take him more than a day to sneak up on it and get within bow range.

My dad moved to Alaska solely for the hunting and challenging environment. We are very different people. :)

I miss it, they're all grown and on their own now. I still get a chuckle out of when I took my daughter the first time. I got her a doe tag to increase her chances, but when it came down to it she didn't want to shoot a "girl" deer (I had gotten her within 75 yards of about a dozen of em). I told her that was fine she didn't have to shoot anything if she didn't want to. We still had a great breakfast afterwards. She never did shoot anything, but she always wanted to go with me. Funny thing was she was a better shot than her brothers.

There used to be plenty of them here but surveys since the 2005 have shown numbers are declining to the point where now they putting a limit on it.

Nothing like killing an unarmed animal by a heavily armed brave boy

Here the favoured method is to hunt pigs with dogs. Trouble is when there is three or four dogs holding a pig down the hunter does not want to risk firing a shot and accidentally hitting the dog so instead they use a knife and cut the pigs throat. Far to bloody for me.

The one that amuses me the most is the south island easter day rabbit hunt. In which kids and adults of all ages go out hunting, not for choclate eggs but for the rabbit. They manage a cull of around 10,000 rabbits in a 24 hour hunt.
Apparently this years winner managed a kill of 889 rabbits.

They use dogs here also, generally to catch them live and castrate them to pen feed them for a while to improve the meat.

Using dogs should be illegal IMO, it is cruel to both animals. Dogs often get bad hurt by the cutters, then people try to make pets out of catch dogs, bad idea.

If you want live pigs, use traps.

Yeah, unarmed, you are evidently ignorant about what a feral, invasive boar is capable of. Your PETA card is about to expire, run along junior. Troll elsewhere.

When you eat meat for supper tonight, remember that.

What does the meat taste like?

Good Shooting and Enjoy that Bacon:cheers:

Already did, time to look for another one. That was the first big game animal I ever killed. I carried the field dressed carcass 500 yards back to my recumbent bicycle, I had to have help getting it in my lap, I pedaled it 2 miles home (Recumbent bikes have a seat more like a lawn chair).

I hung it in a tree and skinned it, then cut it down the middle with a hacksaw, the quartered it. Bout the only cuts I know are the bacon and the ham.

When I cooked for people, they asked what cut of meat we were eating? Hell, I don't know, some part of it!

From the time I shot it, until I got it all in the freezer, 4 hours. I was very sore for 2 days, the hog was at least 150 pounds, if it was an ounce.

First off. Impressed, I consider myself strong but you got me there.
Now for the meat, I am sure there are plenty of guys here that can help ya wit the meat cuts , but clue the very BEST is along the backbone, it is to Die For. I will get back with ya on the simple method of smoking a smoking a hog, takes only a few simple to find and cheap materials, then ya smoke it for at least 12, or better 24, hours until tender, oh ya have to stock the fire can during that whole time, some friends, cards or dominos, and some good whiskey and beer and you are there. When done, run your finger down it's backbone, you will be in Heaven, backstrap is THE BEST MEAT ON THE PLANET.

I don't hunt anymore but I did enjoy it until I hit my forties. I don't know exactly why I stopped. I just sort of lost interest. I want to start again but this time I want to be armed with a camera. Most likely when I retire. I might take my nephew when he gets a little older. Of course he will do the shooting. I will do the eating.

I'm not particulary strong, I was running on adrenaline, we needed the meat and there was no way I was gonna let it go to waste. I carried the hog (before field dressing) about 30 ft to get close to the rivers edge. It dropped right near a thicket and I was nervous its comrade would return to avenge it, my gun was empty now and I wanted to be near the water in case a swim became prudent!

Had by bike parked at the park, later on it occurred to me, I did not have to carry the hog, I could of fetched by bike and used the seat as a dolly! Duhh, hindsight.

The whole thing was rather surreal, I wanted it, but never really thought it would happen. I gave thanks to GOD and the hog.
