Colonoscopy

The anesthesia failed to put me unconscious the last two times I went through this procedure.

I clearly heard the doctors making phone calls, telling jokes, goofing around and telling me I won't recall any of it.

It was painful in the extreme to have cables flipping around in your guts.

I have clear nightmares about it regularly to this day.

As I said I have had two while wide awake and felt no pain.

Perhaps it was the position. I was on my back with my legs up in stirrups.

...

Go do it. I got 5x7 full color glossy photos of mine. I haven't framed them yet, but I'm still proud of them, nonetheless.

That screams out for posting on the Tavern Member Pics thread.
It's a "sticky".

I watched mine on the screen. Seeing the inside of my colon was interesting as was the running commentary from the doctor. I should have asked for it on DVD.

Oi. Just turned 50 myself.

I didn't know that was the accepted date to undergo the procedure.

Bwuahahahaha hahahahaha bwuahahahahahah

Had one at 52. Piece of cake. Even the prep wasn't that big a deal. Clean as a whistle. Have to go back for another in a few years.

That sounds miserable. Seems like you should get a new doctor. I was treated very well. They made sure to mention they wouldn't start until I was fully asleep. I remember answering my name, date of birth and then they both said colonoscopy. I guess I was supposed to say why I was there. The clock said 7:31. Next thing I know I'm back in the recover room being woken from a nice nap.

That's actually a good idea. I can scan mine, put them up on my photobucket account, and then link them into the thread. I think you know me well enough to know I would do that in a heartbeat.

I started having them in my 40's.

I loathe the prep and I do spend hours in the bathroom.

However I am grateful that we have this procedure available to us because it is a wonderful preventative measure.

I am due for my third next year.

i'm 42, and in a high risk group. my next colonoscopy will be around Christmas this year.

I went for a consultation and the doctor comes in and says Happy Birthday! Turning 50 is wonderful.

In all seriousness its probably a good thing I had the procedure this morning. One polyp removed. Probably nothing but sure beats later stage colon cancer. I was apprehensive about the prep but it really wasn't that terrible. Sure you are in the bathroom a bit but it wasn't for long periods of time as I read. The worst was getting up at 2:30 to drink 32 ounces of apple juice and miralax. Yuk.

If you are 50 you really should consider it. Don't let the prep stories scare you or the perceived humiliation. An ounce of prevention and all that.

Anyone have an interesting story good or bad? I go back in 5 years. Its nice to have good medical insurance.

I'm getting close. I'll be doing it when I turn 50. And once you realize that this is their job, it would seem a lot less embarrassing being that everyone goes through the same thing.

High risk? Or just an eager beaver?

One benign small polyp. Back in 5 years. Better safe than sorry.

Yeah... my concern for my health there supercedes my embarrassment potetional big time.

my grandfather died of colon cancer when he was only 58. Mom has had precancerous polyps removed. i also have UC, which is in remission, thankfully. i'm the poster boy for high risk where this disease is concerned, unfortunately.

Ugh. What a way to ring in the Holidays.

i'm certainly not looking forward to it. however, i should have had another one before now, so it's a must do.

I actually got a call from a rep from my union reminding me that I'm 50 and 'it's that time'.

Sigh. I'm scheduling one.

good work. definitely do it. it sucks, but it sucks less than cancer. and remind me of that pseudo-brave statement when mine is coming up. i'm sort of dreading it as much as you'd expect.

I wish you luck. It's scary to be high risk.

My brother died at 62 from colon cancer. (lost my father within the same week, from an aneurysm) - It was a tough week.

Brother had no real health issues, just some mild bowel pain a few weeks before. He was rushed to the hospital one night because of blood in his stools. Admitted.
Within a few days they told him he had maybe a year to live, with chemo. (beautiful wife, three beautiful grandchildren)

He started chemo, and was dead within a few weeks.

Within short order (after all the grief of that period), I scheduled mine. Two polyps removed. Go back in a few years.

The procedure itself was a breeze.

<and the doctors won't let you go -- until you emit a breeze. >

;p

i'm sorry that you lost your father and brother.

that being said, good on you for taking the initiative. i have waited too long to get my second one. i'm glad that i at least have a timeline scheduled, though.

Thank you. Good luck to you on that. It's the prep that is really the only sucky part (at least for me anyway). I can send you some support if you like roundabout Christmas time. :)
