Travel: US Highways and Airways

Hazards of the road.... at least it was too early seasonally for the Good Sam's. :D

Though fair warning, if you are going to come through Knoxville, check when the Pigeon Forge Rod Runs are. THAT will trash your trip if you are going east on 40.....

I hate 40 around Knoxville - east or west. I'm not knocking Knoxville, although there is something about Knoxville that commends knocking. But, what's in a name? I'm still laughing about Peavine Wines - I've seen several signs advertising it in Tennessee. "Yup. We do, in fact, pee on the vines. Don't affect the grapes none though."

We went through heading South on I-75 the day after the bridge collapse. But, since the collapse was on I-85, there was no effect to I-75. No issues at all.
Ahh. Ok. I wasn't sure which one it was.

Chattanooga rush hour traffic is some of the worst I've experienced, and I've lived in the Bronx and commuted to NJ.

Greetings, GottaGo. :2wave:

For those of us who live in NE Ohio, the West Virginia turnpike is the most frustrating stretch of road anyone is likely to run into trying to head South. For years, we made our annual trip to North Carolina to visit hubby's people, and always several lanes were blocked by barrels, which funneled everyone into the two lanes that were still open - cars, motorcycles, big semi trucks, cars hauling trailers, you name it! From one year to the next those same barrels were in the same lanes as before, and in all those years we never saw anybody working on the closed lanes. Weird!

We always breathed a sigh of relief that we were still alive when we finally left W Va, and continued on our way South! Whether the State lacked the funds to get the roads fixed is anybody's guess, but the lanes that were closed didn't look any different than those that were open, so who knows what the problem was!

I was in Los Angeles five years ago and traffic was horrendous. I dont think Im ever going back there again.

Greetings, Ms.P!

When we go north to see family, we go up I-81 and hang a right onto 78.... that has got to be the most terrifying stretch of road, with the orange barrels (as you said, permanent fixtures for YEARS) truckers, and pot canyons (way beyond pot holes).

As we go north, it's always fun to judge what state you just crossed into by the condition of the roads. I won't say a whole lot more on that, since this strange winter we had this year, and our roads are like Swiss cheese....

Fortunately, I don't live in Knoxville, but close enough to enjoy the restaurants, activities, and get to commute there for work.

I know what a pea vine is, but didn't know the contents of said wine! :D

We stayed at the new Marriott on Northshore Dr, just west of town. $150, very pleasant place. The room was actually nicer than the Hilton on the beach that cost us $450. The Hilton had a nicer view though. :)
