I was listening to a podcast tonight and the topic of the US state flags came up, more specifically how horrible they are. I don't understand how you can have such an amazing national flag then all the states a handful of exceptions have boring or just plain ugly flags seemingly created by the most boring or drunk designers in history. What are your favourite and least favourite flags? How do you think they could be improved. In case you need a reference.

The Best:
Texas
New Mexico
California
Alaska

Horrible:
Every flag with a state seal or name of state

Dumpster Fire:
Maryland
Mississippi
Oregon, Oklahoma, Washington, and Wyoming are worse than the other seal based flags

Every other state is just kind of meh.

I think an effort to make them similarish and removing seals and names from the flags could go a long way.

Of course these are my opinions, what do you think?

Montana has a horrible state flag.

My favorite is Alaska, minimalist but classy and timeless. Maryland's is the most ridiculous for obvious reasons. I wonder how many Maryland residents have attempted to change the design over the years?

It looks like Florida took Alabama's flag and just stuck a logo in the middle of it.

Whatever floats your boat. I think it is absolutely horrible, like what the hell is that checkered pattern.

It's nearly one of the only flags based on English history and family heraldry. I think Maryland's flag is one of the most beautiful and unique (then again I'm also a little biased). In Maryland the flag is basically on everything.

The gold/black pattern comes from the Calvert family, they were the first governors of the English colony of Maryland to create a safe haven for English Catholics in the new world under the king of England. The white/red crosses are inspired by the English Cross and were from the Crossland family (which was part of the heraldry of the Calvert's paternal grandmother).

It is the Calvert family coat of arms and damned hard to draw/paint on your shed. Flags should be simple like the Texas flag that was fairly easy to paint on my shed. The hardest part, which was not really that hard, was to make the star.

Most Marylander's don't have yards and thus less sheds to paint them on  It's on our driver's licenses, car tags, and all over businesses/cities.

I used to live in MD (Prince George's County - Laurel, Riverdale and Brandywine) and worked in MD, DC and VA.

Its why wraps and stickers were invented so we can just stick our flags on the shed.

My fav. I really like the Arizona flag.

It's a good looking flag but I've always been confused by the blue. Granted, it works great with the gold, red and yellow but there's nothing blue i the whole state. Even our lakes are more greenish grey than they are blue.

Tucson is bluer than Phoenix. :wink2:

What wrong with the Mississippi flag?

It was ranked 22nd of 70 in a survey. New Mexico beat out Texas for #1 so they survey has some flaws

I loved America West! What a fine airline that was. The flag looked great on that aircraft.

I worked there for 14 years, pre bankruptcy, through it all and through 9/11. I retired with flying bennies that got better when we bought out USAirways, and now have flying bennies on American.

It was an incredible place to work, I miss it (but not the low salary)

We had a Nevada state flag 757, an Ohio 757, Diamondbacks and Suns plane, and a Teamwork plane.

That is not gold....that is copper. How could any Arizonan not know that?
