My job is finalized, and our house in DC is up for sale.

Been down here for about 3 weeks now, and omg, what a difference in lifestyles.

Long story made shorter....the owner in DC sold the business, and my position was being replaced. I was being paid while I trained my replacement, and I could also seek new employment at the same time. I interviewed by phone for a number of spots, Skyped for a few, and then, eventually was flown in for face to face interviews on a couple of those.

It came down to a choice for me between Orlando and Abilene Tx. I had solid offers from both, and my wife and I weighed the pluses and minuses trying to decide which one suited us best. We chose Abilene, and so far, so great. The pace of life is here is so much slower, and the people are incredibly nice. We will miss some of the nice restaurants and places, but Dallas is just a couple hours away.

And the cost of living here.....my wife is having a ball shopping for her new house with her new budget. 400k here goes a long long way......

So to all the Texans on the board, howdy neighbors

But what is it with the winds? Are they like this all the time?

I say welcome to texas, people are friendly but for the love of god merge in with the populous or keep your mouth shut about how things work. People here welcome foreigners but hate the nimby(not in my back yard) out of state foreigners who migrate here and demand and try to change it to mirror where they came from.

Just learn to accept people move at a slower pace, well actually I think the texas heat is more a cause of that, try hustling and bustling in 100+ degree weather with mid to high humidity, yeah aint gonna happen.

Fyi abeline is not really what I consider west texas, I consider that more of western central texas. It is near brownwood texas, which is redneck as hell. It is a few hours from austin as well and san antonio.

Abilene is definately humid enough most of the year swamp coolers would not work except in a shop environment, which makes it more bearable rather than cooling things down.

When I would shut my ac off in the summer to save money, which it ended up not doing, and when my ac went out, My house would get to 140-150 inside without the ac going. It was so unbearable I would walk inside and turn on some fans and open some windows and walk back outside a few minutes later looking like I jumped in a swimming pool. It gets bearable with the windows open after 20 or so minutes, but that mobile home just acts like an oven, which I think is because the metal siding and roof.

Congrats on the new job and I hope youll enjoy your new digs. Sorry about the way your last job went down. I think it's incredibly crappy thing to do to rip someone's job away a then have you train your replacement as if they are doing you a favor rather than the other way around.

Only on days that end with the letter 'y'.

When most people get told they are losing their job, it is adios, don't let the door hit you in the ass

They paid me very well to train my replacement, and let me go on interviews, take calls, etc

Never a great thing to happen, but they handled pretty well imo

And I ended up with good options.....better than a lot of people in the same situation

Well that's a good thing. Most people I've seen faced with the whole option of, "you can stay a month longer if you train your replacement" are just trying to make that one more month's paycheck and delaying the panic of losing their job for a month.

They started doing that at a job I had and actually paid to ship people over to India to train their super cheap replacements over there. By the time they got to my department I had already packed it in and found another job but it did happen there too. They lied like a cheap rug the whole time when it started.

They did that to the first area and told the rest of us not to worry that our jobs were secure... I didn't buy that for one second. I started looking for other work immediately. During that process of job hunting they did it to a second area and I was flat out telling people, "I told you so!" because these folks wanted to believe they weren't being lied to by their bosses. Then I was gone before the next area got hit and they shut that place down and moved it all to India.

This was a company that was all over the country. They started by shutting down all the branches in places with unions first. I was in Phoenix which was the biggest branch so our work-load expanded as they shut those branches down. When they simply started talking about India... I saw that writing on the wall immediately. I knew they'd **** us over just like the union branches just as soon as the last union branch was shuttered. Race to the bottom and we all lost.

Back to your move though... I love DC so I hope you like your new place as much as I liked going to DC. I have family there and while I grew up in Georgia I was up in Maryland and DC for every Christmas pretty much.

I was actually born in Texas. However, I was an infant and remember little of it. Still, I've made many friends in Texas over the years, thanks to the Internet. They were good people. I hope you are able to build a happy life there. If you are a democrat, sorry about your inability to steer partisan elections. If you are a republican, you are in electoral bliss! But don't confuse the everyday people with partisan oligarts; Texans are as loyal and friendly as any others in this country, and those I know personally are patriots to their very core. Listen to them, listen to what they have endured, what they want for themselves and their neighbors, and you will learn that living on an "open border" facilitates problems and horrors that those living in the far north of American can't even begin to imagine.

That said, if you listen to alt-right wing commentary about these immigrants who are willing to risk death, abuse, blackmail and extortion for the vague chance at achieving the American dream, you will miss the reality of grateful, courageous immigrants who have risked everything to escape the horror that their home countries have inflicted upon them.

Am I for a secure, solid border? Absolutely. Does my heart bleed for those who have been victimized by criminals ignored by their own country? Absolutely. Do I have a definitive answer. No. I just know that people are being bullied, murdered and destroyed, and hope that eventually America can save them from a fate inflicted by their country of birth.

I don't have a workable answer. I just cry for the misery of those who have been destroyed by the corruption and betrayal of those they trusted to protect them.

I pray that during the next four years, American citizens will not be in the same position.

My wife immigrated with her family from Germany. She became a US citizen about a decade ago, after being here nearly 20 years. Her mom and dad also became citizens in the same ceremony. I don't begrudge immigrants....they are the backbone of America. They have made us great for a lot of years.

What I have issues with, is those that refuse to work the system like my wife's family did, and the system itself. I know it is a hard process, and can be grueling, and long. We need to fix the time it take to emigrate legally....it shouldn't take 12-15 years.

But can I ignore what the illegals have done to our economy? Our job market? School districts?

They bring a huge cost, and that is the problem....it isn't that I don't have compassion for their plight, but we as a nation have our own citizens we can't even feed and house, much less non citizens. If that seems heartless, maybe you ought to spend some time in D.C. During the winter, and check out how many of our veterans are living on the streets homeless.

There is only so much money, and only so many causes.....
