My friend's neighbor has a great big pickup. She says it's diesel and the tailpipe is like 8" across. When he's a home on th weekends, he starts it up two or three Ike's a day and lets it run for thirty minutes or so. Noisy as hell. Why does he do that? Anybody know?

How long has this been occurring. Does he do it when its really cold?

I don't know the answer to that. I know it's so loud that she has to turn the TV up with all the doors and windows closed. Maybe it's just during cold weather, but don't know for sure.

1)Cause hes a !#R$$ and Wants to hear his motor...

2) Depending if the vehicle is not driven often, the need to run the vehicle, through a cycle to keep the battery charged, through the alternator, if said neighbor does not have a battery tender hooked up.
3) While I know Diesels run on glow plugs and compression, again if the vehicle sits for long periods of time....the seals may deteriorate, so the need to start the vehicle up and warm up to optimal to keep the internals as fresh and lubricated.

Other than.....I have no Idea, I would check to make sure, they dont have a yard house, going from the tail pipe to the cabin.....

Only two legitimate reasons I could think of, keeping batteries charged till he replaces them (bad batteries), if its cold and he doesn't have a block heater attempting to build up latent heat in the block for easier starting later on. That last is a stretch. If he is only doing this once or twice a month, the he just preserving the seals and keeping the internals lubed. That's SOP for long term parked vehicles.

No, I don't, but I have a neighbor who does this too about once a week. Really noisy out in the country, and he plays crap music while he does it too. Grrr.

When it is really cold I will let my car run for awhile before getting into it to drive so it is at a comfortable temperature. Does the sound end with him driving away or just turning it off?

In my neighbor's case, he generally cranks it up at about 10 and will keep it running for an HOUR or more. But he drives the truck to work every day, so I don't know why he does it. Out in the country, you don't want to piss off your neighbors, but I've picked up the phone to call the SO several times, and he somehow senses this and turns the damned thing off in the nick of time.

Just turns it off...

I celebrate earth day by burning tires in my backyard to piss off the tree huggers and show them how much i think of them. Perhaps her neighbor is an obnoxious jerk who likes to express himself in a similiar manner.

Once a day in cold weather is understandable for the reasons given above by others. More than that and all I can think of is that hearing it run must give him a woody.

First of all, no you don't.

Second of all, you're trying to piss off other people by exposing yourself to toxic fumes. That's cute.

People with big ass trucks are often big asses themselves.

I think you city people are too spoiled to understand the gentle hum of a diesel engine. I spent a whole year in afghanistan and many field excersises ran on generators, as well as diesel powered water heaters and air conditioning units for tents. Some of them Were only a few feet away on the other side of the tent wall, the noise never bothered me.

He might run it because he does not run it during the week. I run my little generator on the weekend, but not 3 times a day, I run it once for 5-10 minutes while loading it then shut it down and put it back in my truck, to make sure the windings don't de-energize. For a diesel he is probably trying to make sure the seals stay soft and that the rear main seal does not glue itself to the crackshaft, causing a nasty leak.

But the real question is why a diesel in that area? Unless he is towing something major it seems more like he just needed the biggest thing.

Sounds like he may be a fag.

Maybe he lost his license to drive and he starts it just to play with it.

I can understand that.
