Every once in a while, I need to make a complete break. Just disconnect from all browsing, apps, news, and (most) email, and head off to some place completely unlike where I spend most of my time.

This past week, it's been the maritime provinces (in eastern Canada).

The coastlines and other natural spaces out there are amazingly peaceful, and if you've come there from a city - even Toronto - you can't help but notice how fresh and clean the air is. The biggest town in the region is Halifax, which has a few interesting museums and, best at all, some fantastic seafood restaurants. Real culinary talent there. I even talked a little Canadian politics with the locals. They clearly thought it was cute that an American would even know anything about the topic, much less have any interest in it.

Anyway, I'm back in the saddle now. Good to be home.

Hey, it's unusual enough to find a Canadian with an interest in Canadian politics.

The east coast of Canada is one on the best places on earth.

I love that area and spent a month in the Maritime Provinces back in 2002, most of it on Cape Breton. Good times.

This was actually my second trip to Canada, the first being to Vancouver and "surrounds."

I absolutely love both areas, but they're so different that it doesn't make sense to compare them directly.

BC is so vast....I really enjoy the opposite of that effect in Nova Scotia. Several times during my month up on the cape, I shot down to Halifax for a weekend or over to seaside, fishing villages like Chester. It was the first time in my life that I wished I could live off of a trust fund :)
