RIP Alan Colmes

BREAKING: Fox News contributor Alan Colmes dies aged 66 | Daily Mail Online

I didn't agree much politically with the guy but he was generally honest and fair when presenting his side. Many of the talking heads on the left would do well to pay homage to the guy in their presentation style.

Because naturally the Right would prefer that the opposition be soft-spoken and conciliatory.
Left-leaning pundits need to bring the heat, something that Colmes was sadly incapable of doing.

Actually, it's because he generally took his time to present his case from what seems to have been a solid ideological core rather than a bandwagon, "just because I can't stand the other guy" position. The guy always came across as genuine rather than, like sone, merely a rabid antagonist.

I just heard, what a shock!

His radio show was great, he didn't screen calls, and had some really crazy callers every night.

Damn, whatever you think about his politics, he was an entertaining and intelligent man.

He could be funny as hell. I listened in a few times when I was on the road. We didn't get his show in my area, and it's too bad.

Everyone who worked with the man regardless of differing viewpoints have always said he was truly a decent and kind person. Rest in Peace Mr. Colmes.

I loved when the really weird fundie guy would call in and rant and rave and literally huff and puff and go nuts, then hang up, most every night. He had a messed up guy from Pahoa HI call all the time...Pahoa is a weird place, I always felt bad for the guy, he had issues.

I was really shocked. I agree that Alan's view of politics was generally predictably polar opposite of mine, but he was genuinely a nice guy and never mean or personally insulting. I'm sorry to hear this.

Young. Only 66.

Agreed. He was way to young. Though, that statement reminds me of something Garry Shandling said about age just before he died at 66. He said that 66 and young are only used in the same sentence when we are talking about someone's death.

He was a class act, which are fewer and fewer in this world, and now one fewer today.

Thats sudden. Colmes seemed to be a pretty good guy. The Hannity and Colmes show was I think the last broadcast news related program I have watched.

Colmes was honest about BOTH sides. He presented his points directly and with thought instead of just raw emotion, devoid of intelligent content. I didn't always agree with his conclusions, but I always enjoyed the fact that he wasn't some froth-spewing blatherer. He actually put thought into his comments and presented them intelligently.

Sure.
He was sort of like the David Brooks of the Left, although more of a lightweight.
Ask yourself how many on the Right love David Brooks today...
And then think about the fact that most of the nostalgia for Colmes in this thread is coming from the Right.

Well done Comrade Colmes! God has a very special place for you. You fulfilled your mission beyond our wildest expectations! Those on the Right continue to heap praise upon you in memory of your intelligence, kindness and balanced presentations.

We can think of no one else who could have pulled off the "Straw Man" and "Foil" role for Fox News the way you did! You knew how to sidestep the massive egos in the Fox Newsroom. You avoided asking the really tough questions. You stayed cheerful as Hannity's junior partner. You used your experience as a comedian to disarm Conservatives and you entertained so many of us!

Condolences to your family, your friends and the millions of fans you have left behind.

No, not nostalgia; respect. I realize the far left thinks respect and lightweight are synonyms, and that is a real shame.

Colmes was an "off the reservation" liberal. He didn't always follow the official DNC approved talking points and for a lot of liberals that made him a pariah.

Kind of a jerk thing to say. Guy was soft spoken, but seemed far more genuine than most liberals today.

How is it "a jerk thing" to say?
A real "jerk thing" to say is that Hannity might as well have brought a blow-up doll on set to be his "opposition".

But I didn't say that.

Why the anger towards Colmes? I disagreed with him, but he was a good spokesman for his side. I'm not happy he is gone, nor am I happy that his calm and intelligent style is being replaced by shouting.

I think you are confused.
Why do you think I'm angry about Colmes?
