Operation puppy pick up

Oh yeah it will. He's awesome. I just love how easy it is to tucker him out.

Yeah. It's like someone flipped a light switch on the back of their head. Mid-stride, plop, sleeping.

Enjoy. He'll be grown fast enough.

WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY OLLIE!

Congrats, Rob. You will be so happy with him, for many many many years to come! As someone who was raised with Bassets and owned many herself, I will say that they are the funniest dogs you will ever meet and will ever want to meet.

Remember to reach out to me for advice and help. I already gave you some web links and places to go.

I love him. LOVE him. I hope you guys are happy!!

I'd suggest staying away from setters and dalmations. Unless you like dogs that take 8 years to outgrow that puppy phase of constant distraction and running.
What a cute hound! Congrats, Rob!

Besides that in your quote above, you may also consider bassets can be a bit ... shall we say ... independent?

Haha, not being negative at all, but you may need to put a little effort into the little guy. ;)

Have fun!

I take him on walks and its SOOOOO slow because:

1) He's still so small
2) It's a new environment and you can tell he's scared
3) He has to smell EVERYTHING!

So he falls behind and then sprints to catch up and I'm barely walking. lol

Then in the house he flops around a lot and then he steps on his ears and plops. Then he just lays there like "I meant to do that! This is exactly where I wanted to lay down."

He looks adorably cute but his actions are even moreso.

Isn't the stepping on the ears the funniest thing you ever saw? That's what makes Basset puppies so stinking cute!

Watch him. He will follow his nose, especially at this age. He's a scent hound and their noses are only second to Bloodhounds in terms of capacity. Don't let him off a leash....

Before I forget, watch out what you feed him as he gets older. Bassets are very prone to obesity which is bad because of their backs. They are basically big dogs on very short legs. Also Bassets are more prone than other breeds to bloat, so you'll want to watch him carefully after he eats.

I wish I lived closer to you because I want to meet him and cuddle him!

OH, and I strongly recommend signing up for puppy training classes. Bassets can be a little stubborn. They're like toddlers - little tyrants that make you laugh. But they are without question the funnest, funniest, happiest, silliest dogs ever. I love them!

I read that they get a bit gassy. I also read that they often get hicups right after waking up. Which he does. Thanks for the heads up.

When we picked him up we got all kind of lineage family tree forms and pedigree stuff. Pics of the dad and mom. It was pretty neat.

Mine weren't too gassy, BUT there is something else you have to watch for. Anal glands, especially in male Bassets. When you see him doing the butt scooch boogie (sliding his butt along the carpet) take him to the vet to have his anal glands expressed. On his first visit to your vet you should ask him/her about it.

Most of my puppies of any breed (we foster a lot of pups) get the hiccups after eating. I admit, I laugh when they do. Yea, I am going to hell.

OK so I hope this sets the precedent of what is to happen... I got home Ollie got all excited played for a bit running around then started crying... at the front door. Opened it, he went out and pooped. If this is how easy it will be to potty train him I will be ecstatic. He has not pooped in the house yet.

One week later. One pound heavier and ornery as hell. No longer walks slow. Runs fairly fast now. Is all proud of himself now that he's mastered the stairs... going up. Coming down if he gets cocky and goes too fast he ends up sideways and rolls down the stairs.

This is it. Operation puppy pick up is in effect. I've driven four hours down to his location and we get him tomorrow morning. Ollie.

Awesome! 4 years ago this month, I flew out to ABQ, drove to Childress TX, then drove all the way home to pick up Veruca. Best dog ever!

You can have the hunting group, I have the terrier group...

Was going to go with a terrier if we couldn't find a Bassett hound

This is my second Irish, and I've had 2 Airedales. Terriers can be tough, they are very determined animals.

He's getting so big so fast. Just under 7 months:

You got yourself a winner dude. He's smart. There are side effects to smart dogs though. They like to get up mischief. Better a smart dog than a dumb one, by far.

Stubborn. Hah. That's an understatement. I've known Bassets that could give lessons in stubborn to Missouri Mules. Treat a Basset as working dog when they are young and they tend to not be as stubborn especially the more intelligent ones. Trick is to get them into a working routine. They dont have to do much just something most everyday. Doing so will keep their weight manageable.

By the way Beano works well if they tend to be a bit gassy. All my dogs get the scraps from dinner and whatnot. Seem to work.

I presume he is a Basset Hound. Great thing about them is they tend to be similar to cats with the amount of attention they require when they get older. They love to sleep. And sleep. And sleep.

and eat and eat and eat. gotta be careful not to make a fat dog.
