Whenever you see a sci-fi movie set on some futuristic space barge or alien world, the astronauts always look so much cooler than anything that real space programs have ever come up with. That all changes now, and it’s thanks to Boeing’s stylish new space traveler gear. The suits are a complete rethinking of the personal life support system that astronauts have worn for decades, and they also happen to be really, really cool looking.

I wonder how many layers are involved, both in the suit, and what he has on under?

Looks like a blue bee keeper.

Under? Astronaut underwear, of course!

Diaper, actually (something I learned when researching my latest book)- all astronauts wear them while in space. ;)

As far as the suit goes, it looks like an emergency suit in case of a breach in the capsule. Doesn't look like its designed for EVA since I don't see a life support backpack. Flexible design also means that it would be a low-pressure pure oxygen gas mix (and that means they have to do pre-breathing exercises before putting it on or they might get the bends).

Yeah. Flight suit, not EVA.

Greetings, PoS. :2wave:

:wow: In keeping my part of an agreement with DP to learn something new every day, I just learned something new today by reading your post about astronauts wearing diapers! :lamo

Amazon just sent me your latest book, City of Delusions! I have two baby showers to attend this weekend, but I can't wait to start reading it! It's ironic that your post was about diapers - what's the odds of that happening, since I can't recall ever reading about diapers in the years I've been on DP? The universe does indeed have a sense of exquisite timing!

LOL enjoy the baby showers, polgara. I hope you like the book. :2wave:

Fun fact: when I did research for an upcoming book, I read a funny story about Alan Shepard, the first American in space. While he was strapped to the Mercury capsule at the launchpad, there was a delay and he was stuck there for hours. He needed to go to the bathroom but he was bolted into the capsule so he ended up pissing in his flight suit- he didnt get a change of clothes until after he landed back on earth. After that the engineers gave the other Mercury astronauts condoms to wear so they wouldn't have to urinate in their suits lol. Eventually NASA started issuing diapers. :2razz:

Edit: With this post, I learned two new things today, and the day is still young! :lamo

Bah. Make it bright orange

Lucas is actually kindof an idiot.

When GL mentioned that, I think he was just trying to get Carrie Fisher to take off her clothes.

In another note, I like the MIT biosuit. This is a true spacesuit that can be used for EVA. Instead of pressurizing the interior of the suit, it uses your own body to act as a mechanical counterpressure to hold everything in place. Any breaches in the suit is localized and won't be too dangerous unlike in a conventional suit. The only drawbacks to it is its at low pressure, so you would still be breathing a pure oxygen air mix. I actually incorporated a version of this suit in my newest book.

I actually agree in many ways but he is also genius in ways too, I was just being funny. He also donated so much of his money from selling star wars so I feel bad dumping on him
